Alberta has a rich community of schools and programs tailored towards youth and students. If you are looking for classes for yourself or your child, start your search here! Programs are organized by community. If you run theatre classes for youth, and don’t see your organization represented below, please send an email to to be added to the page.

Program descriptions are provided to Theatre Alberta by individual theatre organizations. Theatre Alberta does not necessarily endorse the organizations and/or individuals submitting listings on our site. It is the responsibility of each patron using our online youth resources to research the integrity of the organizations who submit listings to which he/she is applying/responding and to verify specific information.

Classification Codes

Each program is assigned one or more of the below classification codes depending on what kind of youth programming it offers: 
TYA – Produces Theatre for Young Audiences (TYA) productions
YE – Offers youth educational/outreach programs, theatre schools, camps, classes, and/or workshops
YF – Produces TYA festival
YP – Produces productions created by and/or featuring young artists
YT – Tours TYA productions and/or residency programs

Northern Alberta

Keyano Theatre Drama Force, Fort McMurray • YE

Engaging local youth ages 10-17 with an exciting theatrical learning experience and creative performance opportunity. Participants will learn performance skills in a variety of disciplines such as voice, movement, dance, acting and improvisation as well as the dynamics of technical theatre.

Rural Notes Music Services, Athabasca • TYA YE YP

Musical Explorations is a summer music camp held in the beautiful town of Athabasca, Alberta. The program runs in July from 9am to 4pm each day. The explorations will include musical theatre numbers, speech workshops, vocal development, and the dramatic process. Alberta Musical Theatre Company • YT
Founded in 1984, Alberta Opera was created with a mandate to perform traditional opera for children around the province. Now in its 32nd season, the Sterling-Award winning company is recognized as a fundamental cultural experience in theatres and schools across Alberta. Their celebrated musical theatre adaptations of fairy tales entertain adults and young audiences alike.

The Alberta Workers’ Health Centre was established in 1983 to promote workplace safety. One of the ways the AWHC does this is with The Work Plays Schools Program. A multitude of opportunities ranging from week long summer camps, working with Missoula Children’s Theatre, and working with a touring ballet company.
Concrete Theatre • TYA YF YT
Concrete Theatre tours three productions per year to schools across Alberta for K-12 audiences. Concrete Theatre also produces the Sprouts Festival each June, which features staged readings of brand new plays for young audiences. Our Artists In Residence program Acting Our Colours brings a team of theatre professionals into an elementary school to guide students as they create a show that celebrates the cultural diversity of their communities.
Edmonton Musical Theatre • YE YP
Under the guidance of exceptional, professional musical theatre instructors, students of all ages receive training in acting, dance, movement, choral and solo vocal work. Students further develop their performance skills by participating in open workshops, community service performances and have the opportunity to participate in a professional year-end production.
Edmonton Opera • TYA YE
Edmonton Opera inspires youth to discover the magic of opera through a variety of programs. Accessibly-priced Student Dress Rehearsals invite K-12 students to experience their first opera at the Jubilee Auditorium, complete with educational resources for teachers. Opera Tots is a multi-sensory experience designed specially for toddlers aged 6 mo.–3 years and their parents. Kids aged 8–12 learn about the different art forms that come together in opera during Summer Camp.
Foote Theatre School/Citadel Theatre Young Companies • YE YP
The Foote Theatre School (FTS) is the oldest and largest theatre school in Edmonton. Since 1966, we have provided year-round classes for all ages and experience levels, teaching physical, technical, and creative skills in both acting and musical theatre. The Citadel Theatre Young Companies is an advanced training and mentorship program for aspiring artists between the ages of 16-21 who are serious about pursuing post-secondary education and a career in theatre.

KidsFringe is a free, fun and a family-friendly mini-Fringe site organized by Fringe Theatre Adventures (FTA) specifically for our littlest Fringers. We provide ten days of exciting arts-based activities and entertainment for children and youth, their families and caregivers. Experience plays, music, storytelling, and more on the KidStage, hear a story in the Book Nook, or get creative at the Craft Corner. Kompany Family Theatre • YT YE YP

Kompany Family Theatre produces a season of high quality, professional, touring productions for daycares, schools, libraries, community events & festivals. We also produce a fully-staged TYA production in the Westbury Theatre (Fringe Theatre Adventures) each fall. Kompany offers a summer mentorship programme where teens, alongside theatre professionals, create and perform a touring show for very young audiences and families and participate in weekly professional theatre skills workshops. During the year we offer touring drama classes for day cares, preschools & schools and a weekly drop-in Drama Class for kids 7 years & up. And, we have a week-long summer day camp for kids 6 to 12 years.

NEXTNextfest • YP

Nextfest presents our celebration of high school artists, a festival within a festival we’ve lovingly dubbed NEXTNextfest. This multi-medium showcase of Edmonton and area artists provides a platform for teen artists under the age of 18 who are serious about creating careers in theatre, music, dance, poetry and visual art. These secondary school artists are encouraged to boldly present their work…and show the twenty-somethings how it’s done!

St. Albert Children’s Theatre has been operating for over 30 years, providing training and opportunities for young people to develop skills in dramatics, vocals and dance. L’UniThéâtre offers a variety of workshops in schools for all grade levels, a touring production for grades K-6, as well as a youth drama festival for grades 7-12. Our school programming is recommended for francophone and French immersion schools but workshops can be adapted to high school FSL programs.

#writesofpassage is a chance for Junior High and High School students to write an original play and have it workshopped and developed by professional playwrights and actors. A partnership with the Citadel Theatre, this is a chance for young writers to develop new skills in writing and communication and find their unique voice as a teenager in today’s world.

Evergreen will perform a 50-minute signature show with 2 professional actors in your school! Our performances will engage K-6 age groups, with opportunities for students to perform in the show! All shows feature popular music, curriculum-based scriptwriting, and large colourful sets, props, and costumes. Following the show, our Evergreen educators ask related questions about the material presented, reinforcing the topics learned in the production. We also offer Artist in Residency programs.

The Pumphouse Theatre host year round youth drama education programming for students ages 6 to 17. Classes range from introductory level drama to advanced theatre practices and take place during the Fall, Winter, and Spring Semesters. Along with our classes, The Pumphouse Theatre has three drama day camps for students age 7 to 15. These camps take place in the Winter, Spring Break, and Summer months.

Stage West for Kids is the children’s version of dinner theatre. For starters, Stage West displays an incredible kids buffet complete with all the favourites: hot dogs, pizza, Jell-O, ice cream and much more. The buffet is then followed by a live child-oriented performance with plenty of humour for parents as well.

StoryBook Theatre operates an inclusive variety of theatre based programs ranging from theatre basics to fully staged performances. Each curriculum has been designed with the intention that our students develop acting, self-confidence, teamwork and stagecraft skills. We encourage students to develop and deepen their knowledge of self and their craft, through games, stage work, analyzing and writing of scripts and presenting a final presentation.

Theatre Alberta’s Artstrek: A Summer Theatre School for Teens • YE
Theatre Alberta’s Artstrek is a summer school for teens that explores the exciting world of theatre and stagecraft. Over the course of a week in residence at Red Deer College, students attending Artstrek will learn about acting, voice, movement, directing, sound/music, design, creation and collaboration. They will study with professional theatre artists and educators, and make friends with teens from across Alberta. 
Artstrek is not a talent-based program – for more than 50 years we have welcomed all teens who are passionate about theatre and enthusiastic about learning.
