Theatre Alberta is a registered charity!

To our Members:

This is the last month of our summer students' contracts, as they will both be returning to the University of Alberta in September. We thought we'd give Jake and Jordan a chance to say goodbye to our members and friends in this month's Theatre Buzz:

Artstrek 2015 was truly the #bestmidsummernightever!

Over the course of three weeks, Theatre Alberta’s Artstrek welcomed 318 students from across the country and believe it or not, around the world, to Red Deer College (RDC) to explore William Shakespeare’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream under the guidence of incredible instructors and supervisors.

Artstrek 2015 has wrapped up, the young artists are home, the 2015/2016 Playbill is on its way and summer is coming to an end. But before bundling up for the cold becomes essential, there is still time to get out and enjoy the many festivals that Alberta has to offer! It is truly a delight to be a part of this community!

Have a great August everyone and I’m sure I’ll see you around! Cheers,

Jake Tkaczyk
Artstrek Program Assistant

What a summer it has been for me at the Library! While I have worked as your Library Assistant at Theatre Alberta, I have been able to acquaint myself with theatre of every level. One of my projects here was to research every major theatre company across Canada in order to find new plays in the upcoming season that could be added to our collections. This kept me up to date on the latest social issues theatre companies were exploring on a national level.

I also got to research the most produced playwrights across North America, broadening my knowledge to theatre on a global level. As for regionally, Theatre Alberta has been a great work environment to share views and ideas with other theatre-lovers on all of the shows in our province: past, future and present. I was also assigned to categorize and label all of the Albertan plays that we carry in the library.

Lastly, and most importantly, I had the opportunity to meet with artists and educators face to face as they visited the library. Getting to meet familiar and unfamiliar faces in person was my favorite part of the job. This by far was my favorite part of the job and the best way to learn more about the Edmonton theatre community.

If I had any advice for Theatre Alberta members, it would to read and produce more local work– read as many Albertan and Canadian playwrights as you can. As Canadians, as Albertans, even as Edmontonians, it is important to develop and maintain a point of view that applies to who we are and where we live. Happy reading!

Jordan Sabo
Library Program Assistant

“I regard the theatre as the greatest of all art forms, the most immediate way in which a human being can share with another the sense of what it is to be a human being.”

~Thornton Wilder

WORKSHOPS BY REQUEST BEGIN AGAIN IN SEPTEMBER!

Shadow Performance with Anita Miotti
Pictured above: an image from Grande Prairie Live Theatre’s December 2014 workshop on Shadow Performance with Calgary’s Anita Miotti.

After a brief hiatus in July and August, Theatre Alberta is excited to once again partner with our member organizations to offer their communities theatre training opportunities and expert knowledge through Workshops by Request.

Theatre Alberta’s Workshops by Request is a unique and highly subsidized program that shares the talents and resources of Alberta’s leading theatre artists with a variety of theatre companies across the province. Between September 2014 - June 2015, a total of 24 workshops were offered, reaching more than 250 theatre artists and enthusiasts in both rural communities and Alberta’s urban centres.

A total of 18 theatre organizations partnered with Theatre Alberta to offer workshops in communities across the province, including: Airdrie, Calgary, Calmar, Camrose, Canmore, Drayton Valley, Edmonton, Grande Prairie, High River, Lethbridge, Ponoka, St. Albert, Sundre, and Wetaskiwin. Workshops topics ranged from stage lighting to site-specific theatre creation, from character development to shadow performance. We were also pleased to partner with St. Albert Children's Theatre and the City of St. Albert to support a special workshop with Broadway musical theatre stars Pasek & Paul.

Workshops by Request are coordinated by Theatre Alberta at your request and targeted to the specific needs of your theatre organization. Workshops in both technical and non-technical aspects of theatre bring highly trained professionals to your community for one, one and a half, or two-day workshops.

Any theatre organization in Alberta that is a group member of Theatre Alberta may apply for a workshop through the Workshops by Request program, on any topic of their choice. For more information, please email morgan@theatrealberta.com.
