Theatre Alberta is a registered charity!

To our Members:

Notes for November:

This week, the inaugural production of the Picks of the Edmonton Fringe theatre touring stimulus project plays in venues across Northern and Central Alberta: Accidental Humour Co.'s McCrackin 2: The Whackining by Amos Altman.

The project partners - Theatre Alberta, the Arts Touring Alliance of Alberta, and Fringe Theatre Adventures - cannot be more thrilled. This week is the culmination, but really just the beginning of a spark of an idea that we had almost two years ago.

Every summer the Edmonton International Fringe Theatre Festival plays host to more than 200 productions from around the world.

McCrackin 2: The Whackining - Accidental Humour Co.

Many, many of them are written, created, produced, and performed by Alberta's own talented theatre artists. While Alberta has a very strong tradition of touring Theatre for Young Audiences (TYA) productions throughout our province's education system, we noticed that not many of our own local theatre companies tour throughout rural Alberta to play for adult audiences, and that theatre artists from other provinces or the U.S. were capitalizing on this. The project partners got together to design and subsidize this project –the Picks of the Edmonton Fringe – in hopes of starting a new tradition of local theatre touring in Alberta.

Accidental Humour Co. was handpicked at the Fringe festival by a jury of arts presenters from across Alberta. Later this season audiences around Alberta will also have the opportunity to see Never Let the Crew See You Cry, a true story about young women in southern Alberta who worked as airplane mechanics during the second world war, and The Bomb-itty of Errors, a hip-hop version of Shakespeare’s The Comedy of Errors starring some of Edmonton’s finest hip hop artists. Click here for more information.

On behalf of all of the producing partners, I want to express our sincerest gratitude to the Alberta Foundation for the Arts for supporting the project, as well as to the presenters who have booked productions so far this season. They are:

These presenters have demonstrated a commitment to Alberta artists, and we simply wouldn’t be able to do this without their support.

If you want to be a part of this exciting project and bring a taste of the Edmonton Fringe to your community, visit www.theatrealberta.com/tour to check out the shows scheduled to tour Alberta through 2016, or contact Aaron Talbot at tour@theatrealberta.com for more information about booking. If you are an Albertan artist interested in touring your theatre production across Alberta, get your 2015 Edmonton Fringe application in before November 18th, at 5 p.m.

Keri Mitchell
Executive Director

“I think basically people expect to see the brilliant, the good, the bad, and the absolutely indefensible at a festival like the Fringe, and that’s part of the fun of it. ”

~Liz Nicholls, Edmonton Journal theatre reviewer

Workshops by Request scheduled for November 2014 include:

Improvisational Styles in Edmonton
On November 9, University of Lethbridge instructor Nicholas Hanson will travel to Edmonton to work with the ensemble at Rapid Fire Theatre to explore improvisational styles.
