To our Members:
Notes for May:
Welcome to our Summer Program Assistants at Theatre Alberta!
Three new staff members will support our work with some of our largest programs during the summer months. Please help us welcome (from to left to right):
Dramaworks Program Assistant, Dennie Hamaliuk. Dennie is enrolled in the Arts and Cultural Management progam at MacEwan University. |
 |
Originally from Medicine Hat, Dennie has been an Edmonton resident for more than 10 years. She is passionate about the arts and is really excited to support a program like Dramaworks, as it provides an opportunity for artists from across Alberta to come train and learn together at one event. Dennie can be reached at dramaworks@theatrealberta.com.
Artstrek Program Assistant, Nick Heffelfinger. Nick is from Fort McMurray and is entering his third year at the Canadian College of Performing Arts in Victoria B.C. Nick grew up attending numerous children's theatre camps and it had a direct impact on his decision to pursue acting as a career. Sadly he's never attend Artstrek himself, but intends to live vicariously through all the students he will help register for Artstrek 2014! Nick can be reached at artstrek@theatrealberta.com.
Theatre Alberta Library Program Assistant, Nicole Loroff. Nicole is currently working on her Master of Library and Information Studies at the University of Alberta. She is from Wetaskiwin originally, and would love to work as an archivist someday - perhaps at the Provincial Archives of Alberta. A self-professed high school drama "geek," and even taking a walk-on part at the Edmonton Fringe Festival in 2006, she is thrilled to be working in Canada's largest independent theatre library. Nicole can be reached at library@theatrealberta.com.
Welcome to Theatre Alberta!
Aaron Talbot,
Communications and Marketing
“Dramaworks is such an overwhelmingly positive and stimulating experience, and the chance to have access to these incredibly gifted and generous professionals, in the company of people from across the province and beyond in all their various levels and interests, is heartening and inspirational to the utmost."

ARTSTREK COMMUNITY SPONSORSHIP: NEW BURSARY ANNOUNCED!
Karen Cork is pleased to announce a new bursary to support teens who live outside urban centres to attend Theatre Alberta’s Artstrek: The Rural Outreach Bursary.
The bursary is specifically for teens in smaller communities or in rural Alberta, where there are fewer opportunities for teens interested in theatre and drama to explore their craft. To be eligible, you must live 80km or more outside of Edmonton or Calgary. The bursary is worth 50% of the Artstrek program fee and will be awarded to two teens in 2014.
To apply please apply directly to Karen Cork by email at mrsndiamond@gmail.com and include a letter detailing:
- Where you live
- Why you want to attend Artstrek
- Difficulties in accessing theatre learning opportunities for teens in your community (e.g. my school doesn’t offer a drama program, there is no community theatre or youth theatre programs where I live, etc.)
Deadline to apply: May 21, 2014.
Theatre Alberta recommends applying to attend Artstrek before the bursary deadline to ensure you are placed in the Exploration of their choice. You can indicate that you have applied for the bursary in your online application under the Community Sponsorship section. Students applying for the bursary may also apply for Theatre Alberta Artstrek Scholarships to further offset the cost of attending if they are financial need. (Click here for more information about Theatre Alberta Artstrek Scholarships.)

A huge note of thanks to One Yellow Rabbit and The Citadel Theatre, our host venues for Emerge 2014, for all their support. Thank you also to the caterers, technicians, students, faculty and professionals who made Emerge such an awesome experience. |

WORKSHOPS BY REQUEST - MAY
Workshops by Request scheduled for May 2014 include:
Directing in Calgary
On May 4th, Morpheus Theatre hosted a one-day directing workshop with Kevin McKendrick, which explored a variety of directing subjects, including: an actor’s role versus a director’s, helping actors perform in harmony with your vision, and building a unified team. Participant James Hutchinson (@lifeisanact) tweeted "Great tools & techniques for directing plus I can apply many of them to the writing process."
On a side note, Theatre Alberta is pleased to bring Kevin to instruct a 2.5 day workshop on Directing (July 4 - 6) at Dramaworks 2014. An amazing instructor, we are excited to provide an opportunity for artists from across Alberta to learn from him. Click here for the workshop description and to register.
Character Development in Calgary
Also at Morpheus Theatre, veteren performer David LeReaney will be instructing a Character Development workshop on May 24th. This workshop is for actors and directors of all levels. It will explore the different methods, tools, and ideas that can be accessed when building a character for stage or screen.
Workshops by Request applications are accepted throughout the year. We are currently accepting applications for Workshops by Request to the end of June (the program takes a break in July and August). Any theatre organization in Alberta that is a group member of Theatre Alberta may apply for a workshop through the Workshops by Request program, on any topic of their choice. For more information, please email theatreab@theatrealberta.com.
