To our Members:

Notes for August:

Just over a month ago, 87 excited teenagers were arriving at Red Deer College (RDC) for Exploration I of Artstrek 2014.

Over the next 3 weeks, 282 teens from across country and, believe it or not, around the world, would cross the threshold at RDC and spend an intensive week honing their theatrical craft with a team of incredible instructors and supervisors.

A huge thank you must go out to all of our sponsors who make Artstrek possible year after year.

Nick

The Alberta Foundation for the Arts, Cenovus Energy, the Edmonton Arts Council and the City of Edmonton, and Calgary Arts Development and the City of Calgary and all provided substantial funding which subsidizes the cost for families (approximately 50% of the program fee). The Telus Calgary Community Board provided scholarship funding for Calgary and area students, which also allowed Theatre Alberta’s scholarship fund to impact more students throughout the province.

All over Alberta, numerous individuals and organizations are not only advocates for the program, but also provide sponsorship funding for students from their communities so they can participate (see full list below).

Alberta Milk and Saputo provided 1,728 individual servings of milk over the course of the program, which helped keep the kids healthy and active during their long days of theatrical exploration. Artstrek is also supported by the entire community in Red Deer, both through the staff at Red Deer College and the businesses which provided us with discounts and support, including 2 for 1 Family Pizza, Sobeys, and Quiznos. And a special thanks to Dewy Wood for his special song donation to Artstrek.

The students have returned home, the summer programs are wrapping up, and in no time at all we will be back in the swing of things in the fall, which means a new edition of All Stages magazine and the 2014/2015 Playbill. But before that, there is still time to get out and enjoy performances at any of the numerous theatre festivals still taking place throughout the province, in this, the last true month of summer 2014.

So get out, soak up the sun and enjoy what’s left of the warmth before the impending winter. Cheers!

Nick Heffelfinger
Artstrek Program Assistant

WELCOME MORGAN NORWICH TO THEATRE ALBERTA!

Morgan

Theatre Alberta is pleased to welcome Morgan Norwich as our new Office Administrator!

Morgan comes to us from Toronto, where she has worked as a theatre producer, administrator, and creator. She spent two seasons as Assistant Producer at Necessary Angel Theatre Company before moving on to Buddies in Bad Times Theatre, where she was an administrator and apprentice curator for the Rhubarb Festival.

Most recently, Morgan was the event coordinator for the Summerworks Festival's 2013 fundraising gala and festival launch party.

For the last ten years, she has been the Co-Artistic Producer of the indie company Nobody's Business Theatre, whose work has toured to Fringes and other festivals across Canada. Morgan is delighted to be here in Edmonton and to join the Theatre Alberta team.

THANK YOU CHRISTIE LITES SALES FOR SUCCESSFUL WbR SEASON

Christie Lites Sales

Our 2013/2014 Workshops by Request season was generously sponsored by Canadian lighting company Christie Lites Sales, whose support of the program helped Theatre Alberta offer a total of 29 workshops throughout the year, reaching 340 theatre artists and enthusiasts in both rural communities and Alberta’s urban centres.

A total of 19 theatre organizations hosted workshops representing communities province-wide, including: Bashaw, Calgary, Calmar, Camrose, Canmore, Devon, Drayton Valley, Drumheller, Edmonton, Grande Prairie, Jasper, Red Deer, Spruce Grove, St. Albert, Sundre, Taber, Wainwright, and Whitecourt. Workshops topics ranged from character development to stage combat, from scenic painting to theatrical make-up techniques.

Theatre Alberta’s Workshops by Request is a unique and highly subsidized program that shares the talents and resources of Alberta’s leading theatre artists with amateur theatre companies across the province. This past season Christie Lites Sales was instrumental in helping Theatre Alberta and The Alberta Foundation for the Arts support amateur theatre groups in identifying training needs and interests in their community, and then providing professional instruction to meet those needs.

We thank Christie Lites Sales for their support of theatre in the province and assistance in delivering expert knowledge and skills to amateur artists by connecting them with theatre professionals from across Alberta!

Theatre Alberta is NOW ACCEPTING APPLICATIONS for the new season of Workshops by Request! Visit theatrealberta.com/wbr for more information and to book.
