Notes for May

Heading home from Emerge Calgary on Monday night I was struck by what a wonderful experience the whole program had been: two days, two cities, eight post-secondary institutions, 64 graduates and nearly 90 theatre and film professionals from across the province. Amazing, right?

Emerge is 10 years old now, double digits, and while we didn’t have cake, we celebrated well and I couldn’t be happier to have been a small part of this special event. I want to toss out a bit of gratitude to all the venues, caterers, technicians, students, faculty and professionals who made Emerge such a beautiful experience.

Michelle Kennedy, Programmer

It is this commitment to community, celebration and education that makes Alberta the best place in Canada to make and be involved in theatre.

Thank you from everyone at Theatre Alberta for joining us for this wonderful event!

Michelle Kennedy
Programmer

“Good theater anywhere is good for theater everywhere."

THE KEITH EWASIUK MEMORIAL AWARD - DEADLINE: MAY 24TH

The Keith Ewasiuk Memorial Award will be awarded to an Alberta student who exemplifies leadership in the LGBTQ community at their school or in their community.

The inaugural scholarship will be awarded to a student attending Artstrek 2013. It is our hope to honour a student who is fearless, compassionate and deeply committed to equality and respect for all.

Artstrek students can apply for the Keith Ewasiuk Memorial Award at the same time they register for Artstrek. However, a student can choose to email an application separately to Michelle Kennedy, Programmer at michelle@theatrealberta.com.

If you have already registered for Artstrek 2013, you may stil apply for the Keith Ewasiuk Memorial Award. If you are successful, your program fee will be fully refunded! Please click here for more information on award criteria. The deadline to apply is May 24.

THEATRE ALBERTA ARTSTREK SCHOLARSHIPS

Artstrek

Theatre Alberta strives to ensure that Artstrek is accessible to all Albertans regardless of ability to pay. We offer a limited number of partial scholarships for applicants in financial need. Scholarships range from 25% to 75% of the Artstrek application fee.

There is no deadline to apply for a Theatre Alberta Artstrek Scholarship. However, scholarship requests submitted after May 24 will be considered only if funds are available.

Finding Presence on Stage
Presenter: Jennifer Roberts
This workshop will look at different techniques to free up the body, calm the nervous system and create an organized sense of ease so you can practice being present on the stage. Of course, we’ll have to play a bunch of games, probably laugh - a lot and then do some more playing. Using clown techniques, some yoga techniques and some contact improv techniques, to warm the body, prepare the nervous system and practice being present.

Basics of Unarmed Stage Combat
Presenter: Laryssa Yanchak
Learn the basic elements of unarmed Stage combat with certified Instructor and fight director, Laryssa Yanchak.
