I'm back! With the best summer job ever! I am so lucky to come back to Theatre Alberta as the Artstrek Registrar. That means I spend my days answering questions, processing hundreds of registrations and making sure the students have the best summer possible!

ARTSTREK 2013 UPDATE

Artstrek is filling up quickly but we still have a number of spots available for both male and female students. If you know a teenager who loves theatre and is creative, passionate and ready for an amazing summer experience please send them our way. Artstrek is a place for all students, regardless of experience, to learn, grow, create life-long friendships, to inspire and be inspired!

Theatre Alberta’s Artstrek is the province’s most popular summer theatre school for teens. So popular that this summer will feature more Artstrek than ever before! The program has expanded to accommodate 30% more students to meet increasing demand.

Exploration I for 13 and 14 year olds: July 7 – 12 (26 spaces available)
Exploration II for 15 and 16 year olds: July 14 – 19 (29 spaces available, males only)
Exploration III for 17 and 18 year olds: July 21 – 27 (16 spaces available)

THE 2013-2014 PLAYBILL CALL FOR SUBMISSIONS

Theatre Alberta is now accepting season submissions for the 2013-2014 Playbill! This is the only resource available in Alberta listing professional, community and post-secondary theatre productions together in a month-by-month format.

The poster is distributed around the province to theatres, arts organizations, schools, libraries, hotels, tourist boards, entertainment reporters and Theatre Alberta members.

Your season will also be listed on our online Playbill and web-app for mobile devices. Users can search for productions by month, by region, by theatre classification and/or by theatre company.

Summer workshop profiles

Workshops by Request: Workshops by Request is now accepting submissions for the 2013/2014 Season! This unique program will bring the resources of a skilled theatre professional to your own community theatre!

Workshops by Request is one of Theatre Alberta’s most popular educational programs: the program is generously subsidized to ensure that communities throughout Alberta, regardless of location and resources, have access to challenging, exciting and necessary training. Christie Lites Sales is a Canadian stage lighting corporation and industry leader focused on rentals and production. Christie Lites Sales takes pride in offering the same high quality technical support and product offerings no matter where in the country its customers are located.

Character Development Workshop with Brian Dooley in Leduc

June 8, 2013

Brian Dooley will take participants through a series of excercises designed to help them create and discover character. Using voice, body and text Brian will send these actors on their way with an expanded toolbox for future projects.

Workshops by Request applications are accepted throughout the year, however no workshops are scheduled in July and August. Any community theatre group in Alberta may apply for a workshop through the Workshops by Request program, on any topic of their choice. Professional development opportunities sponsored by a professional theatre company are also considered for support through the program. STERLING AWARD NOMINEES ANNOUNCED

Congratulations to all the nominees. Awards will be handed out June 24, 2013 at Mayfield Dinner Theatre.

ARTISTS MALIGNED BY MINISTER OF HERITAGE

Canadian Actors’ Equity Association condemns the Minister of Canadian Heritage’s savage personal attack on NDP MP Tyrone Benskin. James Moore’s unprovoked comments in the House of Commons were clearly made in order to deflect scrutiny away from questions regarding the Prime Minister’s Office and ongoing Senate issues.

CALGARY ARTS DEVELOPMENT SET TO PRESENT CALGARY ART'S PLAN

On June 5, Calgary Arts Development presented Arts Plan progress to date at a public meeting of The City of Calgary’s Standing Policy Committee on Community and Protective Services, and the public can attend to show their support and have the opportunity to speak for up to five minutes about their vision for the arts in Calgary.

VARSCONA THEATRE TO RECEIVE A $2 MILLION PROVINCIAL GRANT FOR MAKEOVER

Alberta’s Minister of Culture, Heather Klimchuk, took the stage at the Varscona Theatre’s debut production of Teatro la Quindicina’s Cause and Effect to announce a $2 million provincial grant for a makeover of the city-owned theatre building.

CONCRETE THEATRE PRESENTS 13TH SPROUTS FESTIVAL

Concrete Theatre presents the Sprouts Festival in its 13th year, with brand new works by four local playwrights who come from very diverse cultural backgrounds. The festival features brand new short plays for kids and their families.

THE CANADIAN BADLANDS PASSION PLAY WINS BEST DOCUMENTARY

“The Passion Play,” a documentary about The Canadian Badlands Passion Play has won a 2013 Alberta Film and Television Award for Best Documentary Under 30 Minutes. Produced by Philip Spink and Zuzana Novak (The Passion Play Documentary), the film offers an inside glimpse of staging the annual three-hour outdoor production.

DAVID CHEOROS WINS 2013 GWEN PHARIS RINGWOOD AWARD FOR DRAMA

Edmonton playwright David Cheoros has been awarded the 2013 Gwen Pharis Ringwood Award for Drama for his play Invisible Child.
