ARTS & CULTURE IS VITAL TO ALBERTA Happy 2013 everyone! Our first Theatre Buzz of the new year is loaded with information about what's happening around the province. I hope you all had a restful holiday - the community is already very busy! On Wednesday, January 9, I was fortunate to attend and speak at the announcement of the new Premier's Council on Culture. The revisioning of the Council (formally known as the Premier's Council on Arts and Culture) is part of the provincial government's plan to create a long-term culture plan for Alberta.

My role at the announcement was to provide a voice for the Arts sector in particular; it is very important to me and to Theatre Alberta that the Arts continue to be recognized as unique and vital to the future of Alberta. This is a core reason why the Alberta Partners for Arts and Culture was created.

The Alberta Partners for Arts and Culture is a coalition of Provincial Arts Service Organizations and Cultural Industry Associations that came together in a spirit of partnership to determine how we could be of greater service to each other, our province, and our fellow Albertans.

Like each of the organizations and the membership networks that we represent, the Alberta Partners for Arts and Culture uphold the principles so concisely championed in Alberta’s Cultural Plan, The Spirit of Alberta:

• that all Albertans should have access to cultural activities and services;
• that our cultural producers need capacity, they need resources to support these activities and services; and
• the pursuit of excellence in all that we do, including world-class cultural industries.

I look forward to the work that lies ahead in 2013, and finding new ways to support more meaningful partnerships among our cultural organizations while retaining our unique identities and services.

JUST CAN’T GET RID OF THE ARTSTREK ITCH? APPLY TO BE A 2013 SUPER!

Theatre Alberta is looking for individuals who have previous Artstrek experience, excellent interpersonal skills and strong leadership ability. Applicants must have attended Artstrek as a student, have been away from the program for at least one year and be between 19 and 25 years of age.

To apply send Theatre Alberta: a cover letter outlining your reasons for wanting to be a supervisor and your qualifications for the position; your theatre and employment resume, and your photograph.

Email your cover letter, resume and photo to Theatre Alberta by email at theatreab@theatrealberta.com.

Application deadline: March 1, 2013.

All entries will be entered into a draw for one free membership (or membership renewal) to Theatre Alberta! Your entry must:

- Include the role you played, play title and playwright.
- Include the producing company (and/or festival), and the year the play was produced.
- Include a description of why it was the “role of a lifetime.”
- Must not exceed 75 words.
- Entries that include a picture of you playing your “role of a lifetime” may have greater odds of being published in All Stages magazine; however, including an image is not a requirement of entry.

As with our other social media platforms (Facebook and Twitter), you will be able to find the latest Classifieds listings, News posts and other items in our LinkedIn group. LinkedIn group posts, however, are organized as a series of “discussions” and thus we thought this platform would be well suited to discuss some of the strong opinions expressed in Corporate/Culture.

Specifically, we wanted to examine Trevor Rueger’s article “Changing the Conversation,” in which he examines the demise of theatres in both the profit (Dancap Productions) and not-for-profit (Vancouver Playhouse) models. In the article, Trevor argues that the theatre community needs to rethink and reframe our arguments when it comes to making the case for both funding and audiences. It is a compelling argument - click here to read it.

So, what do you think? Why did these companies fail, and could the same thing happen here in Alberta? Are we indeed arguing the wrong points when selling what we do? What should we be saying — and to whom?

The Alberta Playwrights' Network (APN) is now accepting submissions for the 2013 Alberta Playwriting Competition, presented in association with Theatre Alberta. We are very excited to support the competition this year! The Alberta Playwriting Competition is the longest running provincial playwriting competition and offers the largest cash prize of any playwriting contest in Canada. The competition is open to all playwrights who reside in Alberta.

In the AUDIO SOURCES session at 1:00 PM, watch and listen as a number of industry experts and advanced touring professionals explain the tricks, tips and best practices of using wireless microphones. Also in this session, learn how to get the best sound when micing the band for a musical.

EDMONTON PHILANTHROPIST BARBARA POOLE PASSES AWAY

Barbara Poole, Edmonton philanthropist and arts supporter, passed away on December 17. She was 83. Theatre Alberta would like to offer condolences Mrs. Poole's friends and family.

CALGARY

Faith and egos collide in the age of mass-market religion at Houston’s Rock Baptist Church, “the Baptist Super Bowl.” 3M required. Audition date: January 14.

Theatre Calgary will be holding General Auditions on January 30 and February 6 in Calgary. Artists who have not been on our stage since 2006 and who have not had a general audition since 2010 are invited to submit. Deadline to submit: January 14.

Craig Hall, Artistic Director, will be holding General Auditions in Calgary for Vertigo Theatre’s 2013/2014 Season on January 28 and 29. Deadline to submit: January 18.

StoryBook Theatre is pleased to announce joint auditions for the upcoming Spring productions of Hairspray and Freckleface Strawberry. Audition dates: January 20-24.

The Liffey Players is scheduling auditions for their upcoming spring production The Beauty Queen of Leenane by Martin McDonagh. 2M, 2F. Audition dates: January 21-22.

Alberta Theatre Projects is holding general auditions on February 4 and 11. The purpose of the audition is to see those whose work is not known to ATP’s Artistic staff. Deadline to submit: January 25.

Seeking Non-Equity, Strong Musical Theatre Singers to audition for up-coming Staged Reading/Cast Recording of The Raven - a new musical. Audition dates: February 1-2.

EDMONTON

This year’s Festival consists of the following selected pieces: The Ugly Spot by Lisa Lorentz-Gilroy and Exposure by Stephen Allred, Bethany Hughes and Jessie McPhee Audition dates: February 10-11.

ALBERTA

Nose Creek Players will be performing Drowning Ophelia, an original piece written by Kim Cheel. This one-act, book-ended by scenes from Hamlet explores the types of abuse – emotional, mental, and physical. Audition dates: January 24.

CALGARY

January 14 – May 6. These classes will provide students with a unique opportunity to explore theatre skills with professional artists in an environment of fun and faith. Cost $250 (Ages 9-12), $295 (ages 13-18).

January 21 - March 11. The Playwrights’ Boot Camp is designed to help playwrights explore what theatre means to them and what makes their work theatrical, building on the fundamentals of the craft. Cost $250 (plus cost of membership for non-members).

February 21–23. From the first read to opening night, Canadian director Micheline Chevrier will guide participants through a 3-day active learning masterclass on the key steps a director must take to prepare for a successful rehearsal process. Cost $200 (or $175 if you apply by December 15).

February 21 - March 28. (14-18 YRS) Gain valuable knowledge of the audition experience and on-camera technique. Cost: $275+GST.

February 22-24. Come and explore the physical style of theatre that gave slapstick comedy its name at a 3-day Commedia dell’Arte workshop with director/educator Mike Griffin. Cost: $125 (Deadline: February 15). Early Bird: $100 (Deadline: January 15).

March 6 - April 24. The Playwright Circles offer playwrights an excellent opportunity to start and finish a first draft of a play or to continue working on a project that they’ve already started. Cost $300 (plus cost of membership for non-members).

May 5-25. An invitation to interested professional and emerging artists and educators of various disciplines for the first ever national Ghost River Devised Production Intensive. Apply early to be considered for financial assistance.

January 17. The Northern Alberta Jubilee Auditorium is hosting the Backstage Access Production Expo which will include theatre production seminars and a new technology expo. Registration begins December 10.

BORSCHT - FREEDOM TECH PRODUCTIONS - Edmonton

January 25 - March 29 (Fridays). If you are interested in the film industry or you would like to get more skills in the audition room. Ages 10 and up. Cost $450 + GST.

January 21-25. ACTION THEATER™ technique offers a map towards increasing one’s awareness by turning the mind inside out. It increases performers’ presence in the moment. Earlybird cost $150. Deadline: December 21.

February 21-24. Award winning instructor Jan Henderson teaches her 4-day introductory workshop, suitable for both performers and non-performers. Noses provided. Cost $400 (before January 25); $425 (after January 25).

February 25 - April 22. The Playwright Circles offer playwrights an excellent opportunity to start and finish a first draft of a play or to continue working on a project that they’ve already started. Cost $300 (plus cost of membership for non-members).

May 6-24. This course will focus on the creation and development of scripted clown routines. It is appropriate for performers with introductory to intermediate clown experience. Approximate total cost is anticipated to be $720.

INTERNATIONAL

Deadline to submit: February 1. Admission to Central Washington University's Department of Theatre Arts BFA program is based on talent, academic achievements, commitment to the craft of theatre as a career, and the potential for success in a professional theatre career.

The Professional Arts Coalition of Edmonton is now accepting nominations online to acknowledge and honour the Edmonton arts community and its partnerships with our City's businesses. Deadline: February 1 at 4:30PM.

Call for Nominations for the 2013 Lieutenant Governor of Alberta Distinguished Artist Awards. The Awards are open to Alberta artists working in any discipline and carry a cash prize of $30,000 as well as a hand-crafted medal. Deadline: February 15.

The Board of Directors of the Lieutenant Governor of Alberta Arts Awards Foundation invites proposals from Alberta cities to host the 2015 Gala of the Lieutenant Governor of Alberta Distinguished Artist Awards. Deadline: March 1.

Playwrights Canada Press invites submissions of English-language one-act plays suitable for high schools to be included in a new anthology for publication in 2014. Deadline for submissions: May 3.

The Nextfest Arts Company is now accepting proposals from producers, playwrights, directors, actors, designers, multidisciplinary artists, etc. Submissions do not have to be attached to a specific creative project: resumes are welcome. No deadline but proposals received earlier will have greater opportunity for consideration and dialogue.

StageCoach Theatre Arts is world's largest provider of part-time theatre education for children. We provide full training in helping you open and run your own performing arts school. Financial assistance in launching your own school is also available. No deadline.

A jam-packed weekend of guest artists, wild performances, panel discussions, networking events and big fun, connecting early career theatre makers at the 27th Annual Enbridge playRites Festival of New Canadian Plays. Deadline: Open until filled.
