Notes for February

ARTSTREK 2013 IS COMING...

Participation in the arts is one of the best ways to develop vital skills that enable us to live full and happy lives. Learning about making theatre in particular helps to cultivate proficiences like the ability to think creatively, to communicate and work well with others, to problem solve, to be flexible and to be adaptive.

By encouraging the development of skills that support a more sophisticated understanding of the increasingly complex world around us, we set the stage for a more enriched experience of that world. A better life, as it were.

Marie

Unquestionably, participating in the arts or facilitating a young person's participation in the arts is one of the most valuable experiences one can have. I believe that Artstrek provides young people with a unique opportunity to explore their own creativity under the guidance of some of the most talented and caring theatre artists and educators.

Theatre Alberta is immensely proud to be responsible for the Artstrek program and we are so pleased to be able to expand the program to three weeks this year. Artstrek has been operating in Alberta for more than 50 years and demand to participate has not waned. By adding a new Exploration week, we can accommodate 30% more students to Artstrek 2013 (and, hopefully, eliminate waiting lists).

A reminder to Artstrek alumni: I am still accepting applications for Artstrek 2013 Supervisors. The deadline to apply is March 1st. I encourage you to email your resume to [email protected]; I would love to hear from you again! Click here for more information about how to apply.

We are pleased to announce the 2013 Artstrek play of focus in this issue of Theatre Buzz: Fiddler on the Roof. The Artstrek 2013 website will be launched on March 1 and online application will begin on April 2. Scroll down for more information.

See you this summer!

Marie Gynane-Willis
Theatre Alberta Artstrek Director

“It is paradoxical that many educators and parents still differentiate between a time for learning and a time for play without seeing the vital connection between them."

~ Leo Buscaglia

ARTSTREK 2013 - EXPLORATION DATES AND PLAY ANNOUNCED!

Theatre Alberta is proud to announce the Artstrek 2013 play of focus:

Fiddler on the Roof

Fiddler on the Roof
Book by Joseph Stein
Lyrics by Sheldon Harnick and Music by Jerry Bock

For summer 2013 we have chosen one of the most joyful and cherished librettos from ‘The Golden Age’ of American Musical Theatre. Set against a time of great social and political change, Fiddler on the Roof weaves together themes of young love and freedom of choice with those of community and tradition. The script is full of laughter, dancing and rousing musical numbers that elevate and electrify its tale of family and acceptance, making Fiddler on the Roof a captivating choice for both Artstrek students and staff for study.

Theatre Alberta is thrilled to offer an additional Artstrek Exploration this summer, after eight years of the school exceeding capacity with growing waiting lists of students. We look forward to welcoming all of our former and new students over three weeks this July! Exploration dates for Artstrek 2013 are:

Fiddler

Exploration I - July 7-12
This six-day program is for enthusiastic theatre lovers who are 13 and 14 years old.

Exploration II - July 14-19

Exploration III - July 21-27
This NEW seven-day program is for 17 and 18 year olds who have demonstrated a commitment to theatre practice and education.

PREMIER'S COUNCIL ON CULTURE: THEATRE ARTISTS WANTED

GOA ad

Theatre Alberta encourages Albertan theatre artists, administrators, educators and technicians to consider applying for the Premier's Council on Culture. The Government of Alberta is seeking 20 people from across the province to advise and help craft a long-term implementation plan for Alberta's Culture policy.

It is vital that the theatre industry has a strong and coherent voice on the Premier's Council. While only 20 people will be selected, our industry's best chance is to field a wide range of strong, competent and passionate candidates.

Please note that the application deadline is February 28th. To apply, visit jobs.alberta.ca, click "Advanced Search" and enter 1015041 in the Job Opening ID box.

THEATRE ALBERTA'S LIBRARY LAUNCHES ESCRIPTS

Theatre Alberta is proud to launch our newest library service: eScripts - online PDF copies of produced but (as of yet) unpublished Albertan plays.

Albertans produce dozens of new theatrical works every year but only a fraction of those plays are ever published in print form.

Our eScripts service is a new resource for the theatre community to access unpublished plays once their runs have ended – whether purely for reading pleasure, for scene or monologue study, or for a possible remount!

eScripts

Each eScript is searchable and accessible from the Theatre Alberta Library's online catalogue, just like any of our library books; moreover, you can also access each eScript from our eScripts webpage or from our Library blog.

To submit a play to be uploaded as a Theatre Alberta Library eScript, you must:

  • be a Theatre Alberta member;
  • be from, a resident of, or a former* resident of Alberta (*for at least one year);
  • your play must have been produced at least once in Alberta, but is not published. (Yes - Fringe Festival productions are eligible!)

(Please note: If an eScript does become published, Theatre Alberta's Library will acquire the script version for our collection and remove the eScript from our website.)

Click here to submit your play to be uploaded as a Theatre Alberta Library eScript.

Thanks to our first two Albertan playwrights who have submitted their work to our eScript catalogue: Linda Wood Edwards and Darrin Hagen. Check out their work here.
