Theatre Alberta is a registered charity!

To our Members:

Notes for December:

Happy Holidays, Friends!

I officially kicked off the season last night with my favourite holiday tradition: Tom Wood's adaptation of Charles Dickens' A Christmas Carol at the Citadel Theatre in Edmonton.

I've seen the production – now in its 14th season – many times (more than 30?), so I spend a great deal of energy during the show trying not to physically telegraph its many magical moments to my surrounding patrons and speak my favourite sequences out loud.

Keri

And now that I'm in the spirit, I'm looking forward to seeing as many more holiday productions as I can with my friends and family. Check out the What's On in Alberta section below – there is no shortage of amazing work across the province this month, be it holiday-themed or not, to keep our hearts and minds warm in this (bitter, bitter) cold.

Here's wishing all of our members, and your members and patrons, a safe and happy holiday season with much cheer and many standing ovations.

Keri Mitchell
Executive Director

“So much of who I am today is because of you, Theatre Alberta. It’s an honour and a pleasure to be able to give back a little."

GIFT A PLAY 2013 UPDATE - THANK YOU FOR YOUR DONATIONS!

On November 15th, we launched our second annual Library donation campaign: Gift A Play to Theatre Alberta’s Library for Christmas.

We created a “Wish List” on Amazon.ca of titles that the Library would like to add to our collection but could not purchase on this year’s budget. It’s our Christmas list and we are glad that our members and friends are in the gift-giving mood this holiday season!

We are so pleased to report that 36 titles have been donated from our Amazon.ca Wish List, worth $528.59! We still have 83 titles to go - visit theatrealberta.com/gift-a-play for regular updates!

Gift a Play

Thank you to everyone who has donated so far: Zenovia Adams, Amy DeFelice, Michele Fleiger, Karen King, Barbara Mah, Louise Mallory, Kim McCaw,Erika Norrie, Mari Sasano, Elizabeth Wilkie, and Anonymous. (We want to recognize you! Email your Amazon.ca receipt to library@theatrealberta.com so we can post your name on our website!)

Thank you also to Russell & Heather Thomas and Cindy & Alastair Brooks for your general donations to Theatre Alberta as part of our Gift A Play 2013 campaign.

By donating books to the Theatre Alberta Library, you are giving to the entire Albertan theatre community! Thank you again for your support!

COMING IN DECEMBER: ALL STAGES MAGAZINE - WINTER 2013

All Stages Magazine - Winter 2013

WRIGHTING PLAYS
The Craft of Play Creation in Alberta

Arriving in Theatre Alberta members' mailboxes this month is the latest edition of All Stages Magazine. Our new Editor, Frazer Andrews, has taken a look at the origins and evolving methods of playwriting in Alberta.

We are pleased to introduce our newest regular feature, Foils: two contrasting opinions, viewpoints or processes published side-by-side in our magazine.

In this installment of Foils, we asked Meg Braehm and Rebecca Northan to provide two very unique and different perspectives on the process of writing new plays.

Contributers include Robin C. Whittaker, Braden Griffiths, Shari Wattling, Pamela Schmunk, Scott Peters, and Mieko Ouchi, and we also feature excerpts from the 2013 Alberta Playwriting Competition winning plays: Last Chance Leduc by Katherine Koller and Ascending the Blue by Ryan Reese.

Want to receive this and future editions of All Stages Magazine? Just become a member of Theatre Alberta. Your subscription is included as a benefit of membership, and we'll send you the latest edition in the mail. Click here to join Theatre Alberta!

SEEKING HIGH SCHOOL THEATRE PRODUCTIONS TO TOUR TO SCOTLAND

The American High School Theatre Festival (AHSTF), which works in conjunction with the Edinburgh Fringe Festival, has opened its program up to Canadian high schools.

They ask for theatre organizations to nominate top high school theatre programs to the AHSTF, which then invites selected schools to apply for potential participation in the Edinburgh Fringe Festival. Theatre Alberta would love to nominate an Albertan High School production to participate!

Albertan High Schools at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival

If you would like Theatre Alberta to consider nominating your high school drama program to the AHSTF, please email the following information by December 10:

  • Your name and contact info (if we need to follow up)
  • The name and contact info of the school including the name of the drama teacher whose program you’re forwarding for consideration
  • Your reasons for recommending the program (most important!)

Email the information to Theatre Alberta Programmer, Frazer Andrews at frazer@theatrealberta.com.
