STAGE MANAGEMENT 202
with Donna Sharpe

Stage Managers are artists. They are essential to the creative team; in fact, the team can not function without them. Stage Management 202 is an opportunity for stage managers across Alberta to not only enhance their craft, but to develop a support network and a community of like-minded artists. Instructor Donna Sharpe has more than 20 years of experience in stage managing theatre and opera productions across the country. Donna is looking forward to meeting all of you, exchanging knowledge and best practices, but most of all to the great discussions over the PlayWorks Ink weekend.

To our Members:

Notes for August

I've dubbed this summer the "no bummer summer" - good times with good people and a celebration of all the wild and wonderful things my hometown (and its festivals abundant) has to offer.

But it seems like I need to come up with a similarly clever rhyme for autumn. The "no fall fall" perhaps? I'm open to suggestions.

Michelle Kennedy

I'm being a bit glib because writing this buzz blurb is making me sad... It is a very bittersweet moment for me in my professional career and I should just be out with it:
August 30 will be my last day as Programmer at Theatre Alberta. I am passing on the Programmer's torch, a position that I have held onto very dearly for the past two years, and will be taking on a whole new set of challenges as a freelance artist.

Were it possible I would thank and each and every one of you personally, I would. I wish I could! Without even knowing it you (yes, YOU!) have challenged me and guided me through the many twists and turns of our programming calendar to help facilitate opportunities that were what you wanted and needed. I have learned so much about this province, its amazing theatre communities and I am forever optimistic about our bright future!

I have a million favourite memories and will look back on my time at Theatre Alberta with great fondness and love. If the measure of a great place to work is the difficulty to leave, consider Theatre Alberta the best place!

I can't wait to see you all again!
Much love.

Michelle Kennedy
Programmer

“The pit of a theatre is the one place where the tears of virtuous and wicked men alike are mingled."

~ Denis Diderot

AN INVITATION FROM MICHELE FLEIGER, BOARD PRESIDENT

On August 6, Theatre Alberta emailed a letter to our entire membership from our Board President, Michele Fleiger, in support of Theatre Alberta's upcoming fundraiser at the Edmonton Fringe. Below is an excerpt of her invitation - click here to read the full text of Michele's letter .

THEATRE ALBERTA'S 2013 FUNDRAISER
at the Edmonton Fringe

What follows is a request.
So… first of all
thank you for taking the time to get this far.

Theatre Alberta is a service organization which means, quite simply, that it exists to provide services to the theatre community of Alberta.

Michelle Fleiger, Theatre Alberta Board President

Above and beyond all of our regular programming, an organization dedicated to service needs to step in “come hell and high water.” Many artists and arts organizations in this province suffered tremendous losses during the recent floods in Calgary, High River, Canmore, and the Siksika First Nation and Theatre Alberta has been actively assisting to coordinate information and resources.

On August 19 from 7:00 p.m. to 11:00 p.m. Theatre Alberta will be at the Edmonton International Fringe Theatre Festival in the new ATB Community Patio (18+).

We invite you to stop by for:
a snack and some entertainment, maybe a few door prizes… on us
a beverage… on you (cash bar, but proceeds to us)
a forum on arts advocacy… for you
a donation… from you with proceeds split 50/50 between the Alberta Arts Rebuild Fund and Theatre Alberta to continue providing the services necessary to the practice of theatre and the benefit of the community

At the biggest celebration of theatre in this province we WILL celebrate and we will also reach out to our southern sisters and brothers and embody in practice what it means to be a community and what it means to serve.

If you can't make the event, consider donating online or by phone at 1-888-422-8160.

Thank you in advance for your help and continued support.
Sincerely,
Michele Fleiger (Brown)
Board President

Theatre Alberta's Fringe Forum:

The Patron, The Theatre and The Artistic Creator – Who Will Our Champions Be?
It’s a municipal election year in Alberta. The arts community is rallying to find and engage our champions as we lobby for a thriving arts industry in the province. How do we foster a culture of meaningful dialogue and decisive action between patrons, funders, community and business leaders, politicians, and artists? Join some of our province’s most vocal and successful Arts Champions to discuss advocacy and partnership strategies on both micro and macro levels.

***PLEASE NOTE: In the July edition of Theatre Buzz, we erronously note that there would be a 50/50 draw during this event. This is incorrect - we are offering door prizes, but there will not be an 50/50 draw during our fundraiser. Our apologies for the misunderstanding.

WE NEED YOUR FEEDBACK: WCB-ALBERTA POLICY CHANGES

Front Row Centre Players

Many of you will remember hearing about Front Row Centre Players’ (FRC) dispute with the Workers' Compensation Board (WCB) - Alberta in December 2012.

In 2010, a volunteer company member was injured during an FRC production run and a WCB claim was filed. The WCB opened an account for FRC in order to pay the claim and was attempting to collect the associated premiums. FRC appealed this action, and issued a variety of communication tools to engage the theatre community and the public to express their opinions on the matter.

In response to the matter, Theatre Alberta consulted with several community theatres across Alberta to determine what types of insurance they had in place and whether or not they were aware that workers’ compensation coverage for their volunteers was mandatory. Theatre Alberta then met with the WCB Alberta to review the industry’s immediate questions and concerns as well as discuss possible changes to policy.

We are pleased to announce the WCB Alberta is currently seeking feedback on proposed policy changes to clarify coverage for volunteers and unpaid workers. Theatre Alberta, along with our colleagues at Front Row Centre Players and the Calgary Alliance of Community Theatres (Calgary ACTS), urge you to review and provide feedback to the WCB regarding these changes:

Click here to read a summary of the changes on Theatre Alberta's website.

Click here to review the policy changes and provide feedback to the WCB Alberta.

We would like to thank our members and supporters of community theatre across the province who raised their voices in support of our industry over the past few months. Again, we urge you to review the proposed changes in detail and provide your feedback to the WCB Alberta. There are many industries that will be affected by these policy changes, and it is crucial that the theatre community provides our input and recognizes the work done on our behalf.

The deadline to provide feedback to the WCB Alberta is September 13, 2013.

Should you have any questions as you review the information, please do not hesitate to contact Theatre Alberta.
