To our Members:

Notes for April

I was really hoping that I wouldn't have to use this winter scene headshot for the April edition of Buzz, but the weather has conspired against me... (Against us all, really.)

However, there are so many wonderful things happening at Theatre Alberta this month, I hope that your hearts will be warmed by a multitude of good news.

First, of course, Artstrek 2013 registration began on the second of April and we received an incredible 130 registrations in the very first day! After just over a week, our expanded program is more than half full.

Keri

Second, I am proud to announce that Theatre Alberta has entered into a partnership with Christie Lites Sales to support the 2013-2014 season of Workshops by Request. The exchange of expertise and inspiration that this program facilitates ensures that theatre thrives in all regions of the province. We are very pleased to welcome Christie Lites Sales as a major program sponsor and excited to highlight some of the great workshops happening across Alberta this spring.

Finally, the tenth anniversary of Emerge happens this month! It's always exciting to meet the next generation of actors graduating from Alberta's post-secondary training institutions and to see their work. Be sure to read Ellen Chorley's profile of Emerge in the Spring edition of All Stages to get a sense of the impact that this program has had on the Albertan theatre community!

Happy spring and warm thoughts to you all.

Keri Mitchell
Executive Director

“When I was at drama school, I wanted to change the world, and thought I had some great wisdom to impart to people about humanity. Now that I'm older, I know enough to realise that I know nothing at all."

CHRISTIE LITES SALES SPONSORS WORKSHOPS BY REQUEST

Christie Lites Sales

Theatre Alberta is proud to announce that Christie Lites Sales has partnered with us to support our Workshops by Request program. Christie Lites Sales is sponsoring the program’s 2013-2014 season, which kicks off this weekend with workshops at Morpheus Theatre in Calgary and East of Sixty Productions in Devon.

Workshops by Request is one of Theatre Alberta’s most popular educational programs: the program is generously subsidized to ensure that communities throughout Alberta, regardless of location and resources, have access to challenging, exciting and necessary training. Christie Lites Sales is a Canadian stage lighting corporation and industry leader focused on rentals and production. Christie Lites Sales takes pride in offering the same high quality technical support and product offerings no matter where in the country its customers are located.

Christie Lites Sales has joined our government partners in supporting the Workshops by Request program for the 2013-2014 season and we thank them for their generous support.

WORKSHOPS BY REQUEST 2013-2014 SEASON UPDATE

Spring workshop profiles

Through Workshops by Request, Theatre Alberta facilitates learning in all aspects of theatre production including both technical subjects (e.g. stage lighting, scenic painting, design, etc.) and performance subjects (e.g. acting, improv, directing, etc.).

Last year the program supported 19 workshops across Alberta! Here is a an update of the workshops we are facilitating this Spring:

Lighting workshop

Character Development in Devon
Brian Dooley is taking the not-so-long trip from Edmonton to Devon to lead a Character Development Workshop for East of Sixty Productions. East of Sixty wanted to learn more about finding character through textual clues and how to translate those clues into their bodies on stage. Brian Dooley is an actor and director, and he has numerous years of teaching under his belt.

The Actor’s Voice in Calgary
Dawn Sadoway is scheduled to teach a very exciting workshop on The Actor’s Voice for Morpheus Theatre in Calgary. This isn’t a singing workshop: rather, Dawn is going to help participants find their biggest and strongest performace voices! This one-day workshop will focus on how to use vocal technique to help create a grounded performance.

Improv in Jasper
After attending a wonderfully fun Improv workshop in Hinton, members of the Jasper Players (IOTAD) were so interested in having Edmonton improv favourite Matt Alden come to Jasper to teach that they joined Theatre Alberta specifically to host this workshop! Matt will lead participants in saying “Yes!” and finding the magic by being truly in the moment. Welcome to Theatre Alberta, Jasper Players - we are delighted to have you join our community.

Scenic Painting in Taber
We are excited to send retired University of Lethbridge professor Jay Johnston to Taber for a Scenic Painting workshop with the Taber Players. Jay will instruct participants on creating realistic scenery for theatre productions. Wallpaper, paintings, wood grain and other unique surfaces will be covered. Jay is new to Workshops by Request program and comes highly recommended from his former students and colleagues!

Workshops by Request applications are accepted throughout the year, however no workshops are scheduled in July and August. Any community theatre group in Alberta may apply for a workshop through the Workshops by Request program, on any topic of their choice. Professional development opportunities sponsored by a professional theatre company are also considered for support through the program. For more information, please contact Michelle Kennedy, Programmer, at michelle@theatrealberta.com.
