Notes for October

It’s hard to believe that autumn is already upon us. The leaves are changing from green to gold to brown, and the theatre season is well underway. Fall is a transitional time; transition is a state I am well versed in.

I left Canada when I was six, and moved with my family to the land of palm trees and sand, of Bedouins and prayer call – Saudi Arabia. Gone were the mountains, the snow, and the Christmas lights. Here was the heat, the occasional herd of camels, and a strange new language being spoken all around me. It was magical and terrifying, all at the same time.

Maura

During our stay in Saudi Arabia, we found out through word-of-mouth that there was a compound on the other side of the city that had a secret theatre organization working out of it. Before long, my family and I made a regular trip out to that compound to watch shows like Little Red Riding Hood and The Wizard of Oz. It was my first experience, up close and personal, with live theatre.

This experience awakened in me a passion for performance on stage. And it is a wonderful lesson that theatre can be made anywhere at anytime. That's why I love Theatre Alberta's Workshops by Request program. It's Theatre Alberta's way of supporting learning and theatre creation in all corners of our province. Alberta is a huge province; we will support live theatre in every nook and cranny that will accept our help.

I'm happy to let you know that I will supporting new Workshops by Request applications as they come in while our Programmer, Michelle Kennedy, is in Calgary playing with the Rabbits over the next two months. Give me a call at at 1-888-422-8160 (or 780-422-8162 in Edmonton), or email me at [email protected]. I'd be happy to answer any questions about the program you may have.

Theatre unites people, no matter where in the world they are, and that is something truly wonderful.

Maura Penn
Theatre Alberta Administrator/ Executive Assistant

“To grasp the full significance of life is the actor's duty, to interpret it is his problem, and to express it his dedication."

ALBERTA CULTURE DAYS EVENT - THANK YOU!

Katherine Katherine Koller Nicole Nicole Moeller

In celebration of Culture Days 2012, Theatre Alberta and the Writer's Guild of Alberta hosted play readings and an open house on Saturday, September 29th. We'd like to thank everyone who attended, and especially Katherine Koller and Nicole Moeller for sharing their work with us.

A special congratulations to Jennifer Peebles who entered our library contest and won a new Theatre Alberta leather portfolio! We asked our visitors to guess the current number of books (not titles, mind you!) in the Theatre Alberta Library. Jennifer guessed 11,963 and was the closest to the actual number: 10,781!

(If you're interested in purchasing a leather portfolio for yourself, please contact our office at 780-422-8162 or 1-888-422-8160 outside of Edmonton.)

We hope everyone had a fabulous 2012 Alberta Culture Days - we know we did!
