Theatre Alberta is a registered Charity!

To our Members:

Notes for May

My name is Brenda Sutherland and I am both the oldest and longest employed staff member at Theatre Alberta. I work in Theatre Alberta's Library three days per week: Monday, Tuesday and Thursday.

I am responsible for assisting our members with requests, retrieving overdue books, collecting fines, mailouts, circulation, acquisitions, periodical maintenance and cataloguing.

I share the job with Solveig Anderson; however, the talented Chris Profiri also joins us during the summer months to do the mammoth job of cataloguing our new acquisitions.

Librarians Theatre Alberta Librarians Solveig Anderson and Brenda Sutherland

At this time of year, as many Albertan theatre companies announce their upcoming seasons we in the library are ordering scripts to match the announced plays. We want to ensure our members have the opportunity to familiarize themselves with the plays, whether for audition purposes, for research or educational purposes, or purely for pleasure!

In return, we hope that you will help us by sending in your requests for scripts, reference material, vocal scores or musical scripts that you would like to see included in Canada's largest fully-circulating theatre library. (Mind you, it saves us valuable time if you first check out our online catalogue to see what we already have in stock.)

To suggest an acquistion, simply go to the library's main web page and click Suggest a Script under "My Services." Or, you can always email us, call or request a script in person - we would love to see you.

After hours, I can be found in the audience at Theatre Network, Walterdale Theatre, The Varscona Theatre, The Citadel, Edmonton Opera, The Winspear, Mayfield, Freewill Shakespeare Festival, the Edmonton Fringe, the Arden Theatre and Atlas Theatre, among others. This year, I hope to travel to Alberta Theatre Projects in Calgary for Playing With Fire: The Theo Fleury Story and to Rosebud Theatre for their production of My Name is Asher Lev (Chaim Potok was a favourite author of mine in the 70s).

So... if you see me, say 'hello,' and I promise I won't ask for any library fine payments.

Brenda Sutherland
Librarian

“If you are interested in writing for the theatre, the best thing to do first is read a lot of plays and go to the theatre as much as possible."

~ Tom Green

EMERGE 2012 - THANK YOU!

Wow!

Thank you to everyone who attended Emerge 2012 in both Edmonton and Calgary. We had a great time and really enjoyed meeting the next generation of Albertan actors.

The success of this program relies on support we receive from the attending professionals from across the province, as well as the fantastic graduates and their faculty advisors.

Emerge2012 Mount Royal University

Emerge by the numbers:
Emerge Edmonton saw 59 students audition for 40 theatre professionals from across Edmonton and Northern Alberta. Emerge Calgary saw those same 59 students audition for 60 theatre professionals from Calgary and Southern Alberta.

Students and professionals from as far north as Fort McMurray and as far south as Lethbridge - and even a few from BC - joined us for this amazing event.

ALL STAGES 2012-2013 ISSUE THEMES ANNOUNCED

All-Stages

All Stages is Alberta's theatre magazine. Edited by David van Belle, it is dedicated to all aspects of creation, performance, technical production, education and development in the province.

Theatre Alberta is proud to announce the upcoming issue themes for the 2012-2013 publication year. Articles for the print magazine and multimedia content for our new All Stages Online web section will focus on:

Fall 2012: Theatre Outreach
Alberta theatre artists exit the stage door to engage other communities. What are the opportunities and challenges of meeting other communities through our theatrical work? Are we doing any good?

Winter 2012: Corporate/Culture
What happens when the rehearsal hall meets the board room? Are our corporate partnerships working? Is this the new model for sustainability?

Spring 2013: An Actor’s Life for Me
We explore the ups and downs of being a performer in Alberta. What does it mean to be an actor in this province?

Do you have an idea for an article or online component for any of these themes? Email a proposal and writing resume to David van Belle at editor@theatrealberta.com. We're especially interested in concepts that link the print magazine to the online content. Check out our magazine archives to get a sense of length and style of past articles.

If you would like information about advertising in All Stages, email Aaron Talbot, Communications and Marketing Coordinator, at aaron@theatrealberta.com. (Please note that new ad rates and packages will be announced later this month.)

THEATRE ALBERTA'S PLAYBILL 2012-2013 COMING SOON

It's getting to be that time of year again...

Later this month, Communications and Marketing Coordinator Aaron Talbot will be sending our member organizations an email request for their upcoming season data to be included on the 2012-2013 Playbill poster. Be sure to keep an eye on your inboxes!

Theatre Alberta's Playbill is the single most comprehensive list of Alberta theatre season information - listing productions from nearly every theatre company in the province.

Theatre Alberta's Playbill is produced in three different formats: a printed colour poster, an online desktop version and our new mobile-friendly web-app. The Playbill poster is printed and distributed annually in August just in time for the new theatre season to begin.

Playbill 2011

Theatre Alberta will be launching an advertising campaign later this year to help promote our new web-app. We would like to include some logos of our member organizations. If you are a Theatre Alberta member organization that produces live theatre in Alberta and you would like to have your company logo incorporated into our ads, please email Aaron an EPS file of your logo ASAP. We'll do our best to include you!

DRAMAWORKS 2012 - ACCOMMODATIONS DEADLINE FAST APPROACHING

Dramaworks 2012

Workshops are filling up quickly! Meisner Technique with Lori Ravensborg is sold out but we do still have space in all other workshops. Avoid disappointment and get the workshop you want: register today!

Coming in from out of town? For the convenience of participants travelling to Edmonton, the Campus Tower Suite Hotel (right next to Dramaworks 2012) is offering a discounted rate to Dramaworks participants of $120/night for a studio suite including kitchenette.

This rate is based on availability only until May 22, 2012. Make sure you book before then and take advantage of this exclusive offer!

Not sure what workshop to take? Programmer Michelle Kennedy recommends: "If I wasn't going to be working like a madwoman that weekend, I would be taking Vern Thiessen's One Weekend, One Play or learning about Directing Historical Drama with Kate Newby."

Michelle is a great resource if you would like advice on what workshop would be right for you. Email or call her at 780-422-8162 (or 1-888-422-8160 outside of Edmonton) - she would be happy to help!

Dramaworks 2012 - Who Are We Now? will take place from July 4-8, 2012, at the University of Alberta, Department of Drama.

ARTSTREK 2012 - WE'RE LOOKING FOR A FEW GOOD MEN!

Young men, ages 13 -15, in particular!

Yes, Artstrek 2012 is at capacity for Juliets in both Exploration I and Exploration II. And, we expect to start a waiting list for young men in Exploration II by next week. However, we still have plenty of room for Romeos in Exploration I.

Please share this link - especially if you have already registered and know of a fellow student or friend who would love the Artstrek experience! Teachers, if you know of a young man with a strong interest in drama, send him our way.

And, gentlemen - check out this video from Artstrek 2011. Looks like fun, doesn't it?

Remember, our dates for Exploration I (for 13-15 year-olds) are July 8-14.
