To our Members:

Notes for March

This past month I had the opportunity to travel outside of Edmonton for three great events: a Theatre Alberta Board Meeting (Red Deer, Feb. 4), the Alberta Culture Forum (Red Deer, Feb. 24-25), and ATP’s playRites Festival (Calgary, Mar. 2-4).

I look forward to any and every opportunity to connect with members and friends of Theatre Alberta across the province, and so this past month proved to be extra inspiring and fun!

Keri

At the Alberta Culture Forum I was honoured to have been asked to present a Pecha Kucha-style presentation on the Alberta Arts Sector. New friends from the Voluntary, First Nations, Multicultural, Cultural Industries, Corporate, and Museums and Heritage sectors joined me on the Red Deer College Theatre Centre stage in a 6 minute and 40 second exercise to share stories from and provoke discussion about our respective industries. All of us were Pecha Kucha novices, so we bonded quickly to dispel nerves and support each other. Boy oh boy, I put my theatre training to work that night!

You can watch the whole of the Alberta Culture Forum Opening Ceremonies online. Playwright Marty Chan did a fabulous job as emcee, both Premier Redford and Minister Klimchuk speak about their vision of Alberta Culture, and the performances throughout the evening were spectacular! (If you’ve only got a few minutes now, my presentation is approximately 1 hour and 13 minutes in. But I highly recommend taking the time to watch the whole event. Don’t watch in full screen mode or you’ll miss the slides that accompany the Pecha Kucha presentations.)

The Government of Alberta is also asking the broader public for its help in charting a course for our province's cultural future. They have posted an online survey which is available until March 28. I strongly encourage everyone to make their voices heard! Maybe you agree or disagree with the ideas put forward by forum delegates? LET THEM KNOW!

March will see all of us at Theatre Alberta preparing for our fiscal year-end (March 31) and ramping up operations for Emerge, Artstrek, and Dramaworks. Can’t wait for those Artstrek and Dramaworks applications to start pouring in!

Keri Mitchell (née Ekberg)
Executive Director

“For me, a play is a form of writing which isn’t complete until it is interpreted by actors."

In this very newsletter you will find prime examples of ways Theatre Alberta is promoting the growth and development of Alberta theatre and Alberta theatre audiences. We want to provide the best services possible for every facet of our community:

As a working actor, producer of independent theatre, and emerging director, I value and rely on the services provided by Theatre Alberta. The vast and affordable library in the Theatre Alberta office is there when I need to research a play for an audition or for possible future production.
The information Theatre Alberta distributes throughout the year with All Stages and every month with the Theatre Buzz and everyday on its website keeps me abreast of auditions and workshops so I can continue to work and raise my family in Edmonton while continuing to grow as an artist.
~ Chris Bullough
Co-Artistic Director of Wishbone Theatre

We're looking for 78 more Angels before the end of March to help members like Chris access the resources he needs. Will you become one?

For more information about donating to Theatre Alberta, please contact Dawn Ius, Fund Development Coordinator, by phone at 780-422-8162 (or 888-422-8160 toll free outside of Edmonton) or by email at dawn@theatrealberta.com. Thank you so much for your support!

And, Theatre Alberta can help!
