To our Members:

Notes for January

It can be weird for me to think of January 1st as a beginning, the start of something new. Like most of us in the theatre community, I tend to align my creative and professional resolutions with the start of the theatre season in the fall or with Theatre Alberta's financial year, which starts anew April 1.

That said, the official beginning of 2012 also marks the beginning of a very busy period of programming for us at Theatre Alberta, and we're excited to share with you what's happening in this edition of Buzz.

Keri

In particular, I would like to point your attention to our new webpage dedicated to students who wish to apply for community sponsorship to attend Artstrek 2012. The benefits for individuals who receive sponsorship are considerable; the benefits to Artstrek of having communities aware and invested in students to attend this wonderful event are immeasurable. Please let us know if you're interested - we would love to help.

I would also love to extend my personal thanks to those who have contributed to our 100X100 campaign thus far. You truly are Angels of Theatre Alberta. This edition of Buzz is a great example of the many different ways Theatre Alberta can have a direct and positive impact in the professional and educational lives of the members of our community. We need your help to find more Angels like you: please pass along information about our campaign to individuals and organizations that you think may be interested. Let's keep this momentum building!

Happy New Year, from all of us at Theatre Alberta.

Keri Mitchell (née Ekberg)
Executive Director

“It’s important that the audience feels empowered to break all the rules that they’ve been trained in over their lifetime."

100Angels

A HUGE thank you to those who kickstarted our 100 Angels of Theatre Alberta campaign:

Keri & Adam Mitchell
Aaron, Miki & Adara Talbot
Cailín M
Michele Brown
Wil Knoll

Brenda Holliday
Julie Sinclair
Geoffrey Ewert
Claude Giroux
Karen Johnson-Diamond, Kevin Cork & Griffen Cork

We're 10% of the way there! By pooling resources with other like-minded supporters, our Angels' individual donations push above their weight and make a significant difference towards maintaining a vibrant, healthy theatre community in Alberta. How exactly, you ask? Let's let a Theatre Alberta member answer for us:

I believe the community is enhanced and benefited by the many facets of Theatre Alberta’s diverse offerings. As an individual artist, I access the Theatre Alberta website for information on auditions and job postings. I use the library service and read both Theatre Buzz and All Stages magazine to stay informed on what is happening in the community and in Alberta. And this year I attended my first PlayWorks Ink – it was a wonderfully informative and engaging weekend...
~ Sara Van Tassel
Artistic Director, Walterdale Theatre Associates

We're looking 90 more Angels to help members like Sarah continue to grow and prosper. Will you become one?

For more information about donating to Theatre Alberta, please contact Dawn Ius, Fund Development Coordinator, by phone at 780-422-8162 (or 888-422-8160 toll free outside of Edmonton) or by email at dawn@theatrealberta.com. Thank you so much for your support!

ARTSTREK 2012 - SUPPORT FOR COMMUNITY SPONSORSHIPS

If you're planning to attend Artstrek this year, you may wish to consider applying for a community sponsorship or scholarship. This is not only a great way to offset Artstrek fees - obtaining a community sponsorship also looks great on an employment resume or post-secondary school application, and it demonstrates to us your commitment to attending this year's Artstrek program. And, Theatre Alberta can help!

Artstrek

If you are interested in sourcing funding from within your community to attend Artstrek, Theatre Alberta has information and resources to get you started. The earlier you begin, the more likely you'll be able to secure funding by the time applications become available online (mid-March). Click here for information on how to get started!

EMERGE 2012 DATES ANNOUNCED

Theatre Alberta's annual audition event for post-secondary acting program graduates is nearly here! The final dates are:

EMERGE EDMONTON will take place
MONDAY, April 16, 2012 in Zeidler Hall at the Citadel Theatre.

EMERGE CALGARY will take place

Emerge

“Save the Date” emails have been sent out but we’re certain we missed some people (we aren’t perfect after all). So, if you would like to come to EMERGE in either Edmonton or Calgary drop our programmer, Michelle Kennedy, a line (michelle@theatrealberta.com) and let her know you’d like to come! Please don’t forget to include your company name (or tell her you’re a freelancer), your email address and your favourite colour. Ok, you don’t have to include that last bit…

And keep your eyes glued to theatrealberta.com/emerge for more information about EMERGE as it happens.

Deadline to apply: JANUARY 20, 2012

In the last few years,The American High School Theatre Festival (AHSTF), which works in conjunction with the Edinburgh Fringe Festival, has opened its program to Canadian high schools. Local, regional and national theatre organizations nominate high school theatre programs to the AHSTF, which then invites selected schools to apply for potential participation in the Edinburgh Fringe Festival.

Each nominated school goes through an extensive application process before being considered to perform as part of the festival. Selected schools will have more than a year to plan and fundraise for this opportunity – which can be very costly. Several high schools from Alberta have previously participated in the program. The AHSTF does not allow schools to participate in consecutive years. If you would like Theatre Alberta to consider nominating a high school drama program to the AHSTF, please let us know by January 20th, 2012.

Please include:

  • Your name and contact info;
  • The name and contact info of the school including the name of the drama teacher whose program you’re forwarding for consideration; and
  • Your reasons for recommending the program (most important).

Email the information to Julie at admin@theatrealberta.com.

Alberta schools that have participated in this program in the past include:
Lord Beaverbrook High School (Calgary)
Ecole Secondaire Beaumont Composite High School (Beaumont)
M.E. Lazerte and Ross Sheppard (Edmonton)
Notre Dame High School (Red Deer)
Strathcona High School (Edmonton)

(This service is also available to non-members for a $25 administrative fee - see our Classifieds FAQs page for more information.) Click here to join Theatre Alberta today!

If you have comments or questions about our website, please contact Aaron Talbot, Communications and Marketing Coordinator, by email at aaron@theatrealberta.com or call him at 780-422-8162 (or 888-422-8160 toll free outside of Edmonton).

Buzz Correction:

The December 2011 edition of Buzz included a Classified listing for Stage Struck! that indicated Walterdale Theatre Associates as the festival producer. This is not the case: Stage Struck! is produced by the Alberta Drama Festival Association (ADFA) and is the Adult One-Act Festival for the Edmonton Region.

We apologize for any confusion this may have caused. Please contact Mary-Ellen Perley at mperley@shaw.ca for more information about Stage Struck! and the ADFA.
