To our Members:

Notes for February

Whoa, already?!

This was the general reaction to our Communication and Marketing Coordinator’s monthly email request for news items for Buzz. The first edition of the New Year is always emailed towards the middle of January due to the Christmas holiday, and this year’s February distribution date fell right at the beginning of the month, making for a tight turnaround from one edition to the next.

Keri

So you’d think that this edition of Buzz would be scant for content, wouldn’t you?

Not so, my friends – the office is just humming with activity and we have lots to share! Below you will find exciting news and confirmed dates for Dramaworks 2012, information about our new Playbill web-app, updates on our website and our 100 Angels of Theatre Alberta campaign and much, much more.

Time flies when you’re having fun. Unfortunately, time also has a tendency to pass too quickly when there is an imminent “goodbye” highlighted on the calendar. I want to wish Julie Sinclair my sincerest thanks and well-wishes in her new adventures outside of Theatre Alberta. Although she assures me that her relationship with Theatre Alberta is not over, just changing, we are all going to miss her regular presence in our office. All the best, Julie, in everything you do!

Here’s to a great February – another short month. I will be chatting with you from your inboxes again sooner than you think.

Keri Mitchell (née Ekberg)
Executive Director

“... experience will sort of seep into your blood and [into] your dreams...."

Farewell and Best Wishes to Julie, our Administrative Assistant

Julie Sinclair, Theatre Alberta's long time, part time Administrative Assistant, enjoyed her last day in the office earlier this week, crossing many ts and dotting many is for us as she prepares to move on to new and exciting adventures.

Julie has been an invaluable member of the Theatre Alberta team since 2006. She has been instrumental in the success of many of our new and improved programs and services, including The Playbill, online postings/classifieds, PlayWorks Ink and Emerge.

Julie

Julie at PlayWorks Ink

Most importantly she was a fabulous resource and keen listener for all of our members looking for help or advice on any imaginable theatre topic. Her passion for theatre is unparalleled and infectious! Theatre Alberta as a whole is better connected and more responsive because of Julie’s efforts.

Thanks for the great years, Julie! We promise to do our best to uphold your exemplary enthusiasm for all things theatre in Alberta. We know our members all join us in wishing you the very best in all your new adventures!

100Angels

A HUGE thank you to our newest Angels!

(Fort McMurray)

By pooling resources with other like-minded supporters, our Angels' individual donations push above their weight and make a significant difference towards maintaining a vibrant, healthy theatre community in Alberta.

In this very newsletter you will find prime examples of ways Theatre Alberta is promoting the growth and development of Alberta theatre and Alberta theatre audiences. We want to provide the best services possible for every facet of our community:

Theatre Alberta's work is the envy of other provinces and their theatre arts communities. Theatre artists across Alberta benefit through TA's fierce commitment to providing support and advocacy for every community at the professional, amateur, and educational level.
~ Tami Dowler-Coltman
Principal, Victoria School of the Arts

We're looking for 86 more Angels before the end of March to help members like Tami continue to access theatre resources and ensure her students graduate to a thriving theatre scene. Will you become one?

For more information about donating to Theatre Alberta, please contact Dawn Ius, Fund Development Coordinator, by phone at 780-422-8162 (or 888-422-8160 toll free outside of Edmonton) or by email at [email protected]. Thank you so much for your support!

DRAMAWORKS 2012

Dramaworks, Theatre Alberta's biennial adult summer workshop series is coming up fast and we are thrilled to announce our exciting special guests: Governor General Award-winner Vern Thiessen and the UK's punchdrunk (creators of the off-Broadway hit Sleep No More, pictured right).

Sleep No More

Thiessen

Mr. Thiessen will offer a playwriting intensive for those looking to hone their skills and complete a short play over the course of this exciting weekend. The punchdrunk team (led by co-Artistic Director and choreographer Maxine Doyle) will take participants on a wild ride through their process of creating a fully immersive performance piece.

Dramaworks will take place from July 4-8, 2012, in and around the Department of Drama at the University of Alberta. Further information about this summer's programming will be available online in March.

Registration information will be sent to Theatre Alberta members with the Spring edition of All Stages in early March. If you do not receive All Stages but would like to start, please give us a call at the office.

For even more information, please visit our website or drop our programmer, Michelle Kennedy, a line at [email protected].

Deadline to apply: MARCH 30, 2012

Every second summer at Theatre Alberta, a die-hard theatre devotee processes Dramaworks applications from all over the province. The ideal candidate for this position is enthusiastic about theatre, enjoys dealing with people and is able to work independently and as a team player.

This position offers 13 weeks of full time employment. Employment to begin May 7, 2012. Preference will be given to full time, post-secondary student applicants.

Excellent computer skills, especially data entry experience, and event management experience will be considered assets. Interested individuals must be available to work onsite at Dramaworks at the University of Alberta from July 2 until July 8 inclusive. The remainder of the employment period will be at Theatre Alberta’s office in Edmonton.

Think you've got what it takes to be a Regi-star? Send us your resume and a cover letter stating your interest.

Application deadline is March 30, 2012 (or until position is filled).
