Notes for August

Every August, I feel the promise of fall. I know that technically it’s still summer, but with back-to-school commercials, putting together the next annual Playbill, and that smell – you know, that autumn breeze – I feel it. The time has come to get down to business.

This year that feeling is tinged with sadness, I’ll admit. I’ve been the Office Administrator and Executive Assistant at Theatre Alberta since September 2010, but I’m leaving at the end of August in pursuit of further education. So yes, I’m starting something new, but also ending a chapter of my life.

Stephanie Leaf

In the past two years, I’ve been the one to answer the phones, man the main Theatre Alberta email, and been lucky enough to be a part of every program we offer. I can map my time here with the ebbs and flows of our programming. It has been an absolute joy. I love this organization, and as cheesy as it sounds, I cannot wait to access Theatre Alberta as a member.

I will, in time, apply for a workshop through Workshops by Request (my favourite program… shh!). I’ll be sure to attend the next PlayWorks Ink or Dramaworks (instead of working them!). I will check the Playbill to see what’s playing around town, and eagerly devour All Stages, just to keep in the loop about what’s happening around the province.

I will be happy to hand over the reigns to our new Office Administrator but right now I'm sad to leave Theatre Alberta. On the bright side, I’ll be visiting often, because after years of seeing plays come into our library (and having no time to read them), I’ve got some serious catching up to do!

Thanks for reading,

Stephanie Leaf
Outgoing Office Administrator and Executive Assistant

ARTSTREK 2012 - PARTING IS SUCH SWEET SORROW...

Artstrek 2012

Thank you so much! Another great Artstrek experience is now in the books. A total of 305 students attended this year!

Exploration I welcomed a whopping 100 new Artstrek students, and Exploration II had 100 returning Artstrek students.

It was the final year of the program for 13 of our Exploration II students as they have turned 18 and completed grade 12; we wish them well in their future endeavors. (And, perhaps welcome a few back some years in the future as new Supers?!)

A reminder that Artstrek 2013 will be extended to three weeks so we can meet registration demand. We're going to need your help - please share your experiences and tell everyone you know!

Artstrek 2013 is our musical year - stay tuned for which script we intend to study...

FAREWELL AND THANKS TO JANICE HOOVER AND MARIANN KIRBY

Janice

Janice Hoover

Mariann

Mariann Kirby

Theatre Alberta would like to thank our two summer registrars - Janice Hoover and Mariann Kirby - for all their fabulous work this summer. We are going to miss you! We asked Janice and Mariann to provide a little farewell note in this edition of Buzz:

As I read through the student evaluations of the Artstrek program, I am reminded of how deeply each student invests in themselves, in others, and in the shared community of Artstrek to create its very special magic. It's been wonderful to have been a part of that magic; keep your Artstrek glow with you all year long, and come back next year ready to re-connect, renew, and re-discover in 2013!

- Janice Hoover

Dramaworks is an awesome program and I'm so proud to have been a part of it. Working at Theatre Alberta this summer has opened my eyes to so many great things happening in the theatre community and I am grateful for the experience. Thank you to the Theatre Alberta staff and everyone who participated in Dramaworks for making this a rockin' summer. With August ahead of me, I am looking forward to traveling, Fringing and counting down the days until I get to go back to school and start my middle year of the BFA Acting program. THANKS FOR A FANTASTIC SUMMER!

- Mariann Kirby
