THEATRE ALBERTA SEEKS EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR

Theatre Alberta is seeking a creative and highly motivated Executive Director who will manage the organization’s programs and services. Working on behalf of the Board of Directors, the Executive Director provides leadership and management in support of the mission, objectives and goals of Theatre Alberta.

This is a full-time position based in Edmonton, Alberta. Competitive salary and benefits offered based on the candidate’s experience.

ALBERTA'S 2010 BUDGET ANNOUNCED

While the details have yet to be revealed, Alberta's 2010 budget has been announced. The impact of the cuts to the Alberta Foundation of the Arts are likely to significantly impact our community. To read the message from Minister of Culture and Community Spirit Lindsay Blackett that accompanied the release of the budget, click here. Theatre Alberta encourages our members to read and reflect upon this message and to react as you see fit.

 

THE CANADA COUNCIL FOR THE ARTS ANNOUNCES THE JOHN HIRSCH PRIZE WINNERS

Professional directors Beatriz Pizano of Toronto and Christian Lapointe of Quebec City are the winners of the John Hirsch Prizes administered by the Canada Council for the Arts. The two $6,000 prizes are awarded every second year to emerging professional theatre directors – one working in English and one working in French.

Candidates must have no more than ten years of experience as a professional director as well as have demonstrated great potential and an exciting artistic vision. Nominations for the prizes are solicited from the Canadian professional theatre community and a committee of actively practicing theatre artists chooses the winner from a list of nominees. More >

 

PUMPHOUSE 2012 PARTNERSHIP FOR WEST VILLAGE REVITALIZATION MOVES FORWARD

Pumphouse Theatre Society (PTS) Executive Director Scott McTavish announced the launch of Pumphouse 2012: a catalyst for change and a social and cultural boon to the people of Calgary. Central and fundamental to the goals envisioned by Calgary’s West Village revitalization strategy, the Pumphouse 2012 project focuses on the renovation and expansion of Calgary's historic Pumphouse Theatre. Architecturally innovative, socially responsible and culturally significant, Pumphouse 2012 will define the creative voice of the entire new West Village community.

The first phase of Pumphouse 2012 will include renovations and upgrades to the two existing theatres (Joyce Doolittle Theatre and the Victor Mitchell Theatre). A new 150 seat black box theatre will also be added, along with the incorporation of a business centre for use by non-profit organizations. More >

Calling all high school playwrights, actors, directors, designers, stage managers, technicians, and theatre artists/creators…

High school students are invited to work in a professional theatre setting and showcase their talent at Edmonton’s largest emerging artist festival, Nextfest 2010. Nextfest is an annual multi-disciplinary springtime arts festival dedicated to the cultivation, development, and dissemination of the emerging professional artist’s voice. Its theme is based on the tenets of youth, development, and new artistic works. More >

CALL FOR SCRIPTS AND PROPOSALS - FEMFEST 2010: On the Edge

Sarasvàti Productions is proud to announce that their eighth FemFest will take place in the fall of 2010 in Winnipeg. They are currently seeking submissions of finished scripts and proposals of work in progress. Subject matter is wide open but their focus this year is ‘edgy’ work that takes risks. The play must be written by a Canadian female playwright and have a running time of no more than one hour. More >

Bow Valley College Continuing Education invites you to explore the fascinating aspects that make theatre so compelling, through lecture, discussion, and attending three different professional productions. Guided by theatre professionals, this course involves four in-class sessions where you will learn about the upcoming play and then share your impressions of the play you've just seen. PLAYWRIGHTING CIRCLE FOR FRINGE FESTIVAL PLAYWRIGHTS

April 19 - June 7, 2010 (Mondays) - Edmonton

The Alberta Playwrights’ Network and The Edmonton Public Library are proud to co-present an eight week writer’s circle, led by Edmonton playwright Chris Craddock. The focus will be on self-directed goals to take your scheduled Fringe Festival new play to the next level. Writers will work with a small group of other participants to identify goals for further development within their script, and then work towards those goals over the course of the eight weeks. The circle will culminate with a public reading of segments of the scripts.  More >

NORTHERN LIGHT THEATRE NEEDS YOU!

Northern Light Theatre is still looking for volunteers for their upcoming 2010 bingos:

Tuesday, March 9, 2010 from 4:45 pm - 9:30 pm

Monday, March 15, 2010 from 11:30 am - 5:30 pm

Saturday, April 3, 2010 from 5:30 pm – 9:30 pm and 9:30 pm - 11:45 pm

All bingos are held at Caesar’s Bingo (8770-170 Avenue) in West Edmonton Mall. Volunteers receive a free meal while working the bingo and a free ticket to a NLT show of their choice!

FUNDING FOR EQUITY STAGE MANAGERS - CPR & FIRST AID CLASSES

Canadian Actors' Equity Association is please to announce that funding is available to stage managers who are full members of Equity and who wish to take a first aid or CPR training class from a recognized training provider. Members must be registered in the stage management discipline and must be in good standing to qualify for a tuition rebate.

A member's rebate is capped at $40 (towards tuition costs). In order to receive a reimbursement, members must remit an original receipt for a first aid or CPR class, along with up-to-date contact information and a current email address. First aid or CPR training classes must be supplied by a recognized training provider.
