LIBRARIAN'S PICK

At the Zenith of the Empire by Stewart Lemoine

In 1913, legendary tragedienne Sarah Bernhardt traveled to Edmonton, Alberta, to perform the last act of Alexandre Dumas' The Lady of the Camellias before two packed houses at the Empire Theatre. Inspired by Fallen Empires - John Orrell's celebrated history of Edmonton's Early theatre scene - this play creates a swirling speculative scenario about the impact of this very special day on the lives of Edmonton's earliest theatre goers and theatre practitioners. The Divine Sarah herself narrates this sumptuous romp of reminiscence, as the characters visit such local landmarks as Ada Boulevard, the Groat Ravine, the newly annexed Strathcona, and the not-quite completed High Level Bridge.

Shortlisted for the 2008 Gwen Pharis Ringwood Award for Drama as part of the Writers Guild of Alberta Literary Awards

LIBRARY HOURS

Please note that the library will be closed and the book drop unavailable October 10 – 12, 2009, for Thanksgiving.

MAJOR INVESTMENT IN ROSEBUD SCHOOL OF THE ARTS

The Rosebud School of the Arts will receive Federal and Provincial funding to build the Rosebud Centre, a 10,000 square foot two-story wood-framed building, that will include an enlarged gift shop, tourist information service centre, flexible education teaching space, and a restaurant to complement the current dining capacity at the Mercantile Dining Room. In addition to creating jobs, these improvements will further generate revenues by allowing the facility to operate year-round and enable more local and regional events, conferences, and festivals to be held in Rosebud.

Federal funding of $2 million is being provided through the Community Adjustment Fund (CAF) as part of Canada’s Economic Action Plan. In addition, the Government of Alberta is contributing $450,000 through the Community Facility Enhancement Program. More >

LUNCHBOX THEATRE ANNOUNCES NEW AD

Pamela Halstead, named the fifth artistic director in Lunchbox Theatre’s 34-year history, comes to Lunchbox after six years as the Artistic Producer of Ship’s Company Theatre in Parrsboro, Nova Scotia.

“Lunchbox is a unique theatre that has a lot to offer not only its loyal audience but the Canadian theatre community,” says Halstead. “Many plays start their journeys as shorter pieces that then get further developed for the larger stages across the country. I look forward to the challenges ahead and leading Lunchbox Theatre through the next stage of the journey.” More >
