"Life beats down and crushes the soul...and art reminds you that you have one."  —Stella Adler

What's New at TA

From October 23–26, after much excitement and anticipation, the Glenbow Museum, Alberta Theatre Projects and Calgary Telus Convention Centre were crowded with eager participants and instructors from across the country – all with a common interest in breaking new creative ground. The weekend included play readings, a panel discussion, insightful workshops, and featured guest Judith Thompson; check out our website in the days to come to hear her keynote address.  Theatre Alberta extends a hearty thank you to Alberta Theatre Projects, Downstage theatre, the instructors, and especially the participants, whose incredible passion and dedication made PlayWorks Ink such an incredible weekend!

August: Osage County by Tracy Letts

When their patriarch vanishes, the Weston clan must return to their three-story home in rural Oklahoma to get to the heart of the matter.  The play deals with issues of drug abuse, suicide, alcoholism, death , family dysfunction, sexual harassment, aging, and ultimately love. A drama in three acts with thirteen characters; six male;six female;one girl. Winner of The 2008 Pulitzer Prize for Drama and Tony Award for Best Play. Reserve a copy today!

The Theatre Alberta office and library will be closed the following dates:

November 11, 2008 (Remembrance Day – drop box unavailable)
November 16, 2008 (Building upgrades – drop box unavailable)
November 22, 2008 (Office maintenance – drop box available)

The building will remain open on November 22 so library material may be returned via the south entrance of the building and our book depository will be outside the office doors.

CLOWNS WITHOUT BORDERS IN SOUTH AFRICA

A journal Entry by Alice Nelson – Calgary Herald

The goal of Clowns Without Borders (South Africa) is to bring joy and laughter to children whose lives have been affected by HIV/AIDS. In 2006, it was estimated that some twelve million children had lost at least one parent to AIDS.  There are over one million AIDS orphans in South Africa.  They live in extreme poverty and many experience abuse and neglect. These are facts that disappear when I see hundreds of faces smiling and hear laughter that pierces my ears.  More >

To follow along with Alice’s CWB journal entries, check out the Calgary Herald’s Neighbours section, which comes out on Thursdays.
