Artstrekkers will reunite this summer with the famously macabre Addams Family in this original story that puts the beloved and bizarre characters to the test: Wednesday, the princess of darkness has fallen for a respectable, sweet, and… ordinary man. Meanwhile, Gomez tries to keep a secret from his love Morticia, Pugsley and Grandmama hatch schemes, Fester finds a new love of his own, and it seems that everything as this family knows it, will change!

Join us…What could go wrong?

Artstrek is a summer theatre school for teens held at Red Deer Polytechnic that provides professional learning with theatre artists and educators in a collaborative environment. Artstrek is more than 60 years old and has 10,000+ alumni working across Alberta, Canada, and the world. Artstrek students explore the creative process through five daily classes that include the study of acting, movement, voice, devising, design, directing, and dramaturgy.

All of these classes take inspiration from a single play of study—this year’s is a musical, Marshall Brickman and Rick Elice’s The Addams Family! Students become a part of the Artstrek community, and create friendships that will last a lifetime.

Each week-long “Exploration” takes place within the performing arts facilities at RDP. Students stay in dormitories on campus and eat meals together in the RDP cafeteria. Classes run daily from 8:30am to 5:00pm. Artstrek Supervisors lead fun activities each evening.

Red Deer Polytechnic is excited to welcome the students and instructors of Artstrek 2024 to our campus.

Our longstanding partnership with this unique summer theatre school and with Theatre Alberta is a point of pride for our campus community. For more than 20 years, talented young Albertans have gathered each summer at RDP to experience the joy of creativity and connection the Artstrek program provides.

At Red Deer Polytechnic, we believe deeply in the power of teaching and learning through experience and collaboration. In addition to developing practical, real-world skills, we aim to develop in all our students a sense of citizenship, leadership, and belonging. It is my hope that the students visiting us for Artstrek 2024 will not only deepen their skills as artists and performers, but also experience the true joy of innovation: the sense of possibility that emerges when a multitude of diverse talents are combined and unleashed.

Whether your passion lies in theatre production, design, acting, dancing, singing – or any combination of these – Red Deer Polytechnic is proud to be a part of your journey as young artists. I hope you will have a memorable experience at Artstrek that results in new skills, new friendships, and a new confidence in your own creative abilities.

Have a terrific summer!
Stuart Cullum
President of Red Deer Polytechnic

Message from the Alberta Foundation for the Arts

On behalf of the Board of Directors of the Alberta Foundation for the Arts, it is my pleasure to welcome you to Artstrek 2024. You are taking part in a long-standing tradition that has welcomed young theatre artists, like yourselves, for the past six decades.

The AFA believes people of all ages and from all backgrounds should have opportunities to experience, learn about, and appreciate the arts. Providing opportunities for youth across the province is an important part of sustaining the arts in Alberta and that’s why we are proud to support organizations like Theatre Alberta and programs like Artstrek.

Theatre is an exciting medium for artists to tell stories, old and new. It can be an opportunity for someone to tell a story in their own unique way. The Addams Family has been enjoyed by many—through movies, theatre, and television—for decades, and attending Artstrek and performing an original twist on an old classic is a wonderful choice for you to learn to tell your own stories.

The AFA Board and I are excited to see what you will accomplish, and we hope you all have a fantastic and enjoyable time at Artstrek 2024!

Paul Baay
Chair, Board of Directors
Alberta Foundation for the Arts
