Position: Summer Drama Camp Counsellor

Sleeping Giants Theatre is looking for a friendly, organized and self motivated team player to assist us with our growing organization this summer. The Summer Camp Counselors will work as a team to create exciting and educational days for all campers, as well as coordinating the presentation of a play for family and friends at the end of the camp.

Qualifications and Experience:

● Post secondary education or equivalent experience in the theatre arts strongly preferred.
● Experience working with children, and teaching either drama, singing or dance is strongly preferred.
● Prior summer camp counselor experience preferred.
● First Aid Training
● Vulnerable Sector Check

 

Skills and Competencies:

● Love of working with children & creating theatre.
● Strong classroom management skills and LOTS of patience.
● Strong problem solving and quick thinking skills.
● Ability to multitask and keep eyes on all members of the group to ensure everyone’s safety and wellbeing.
● Flexibility and willingness to pivot and change plans with little notice (for example, with weather changes, group dynamics, etc.)
● Empathy and awareness of others’ emotions is an asset. Drama camp can be a very vulnerable place for lots of kiddos, and we are committed to helping them feel seen and safe.
● Ability to work both individually and as a team.
● Strong communication skills, and ability to speak confidently in front of large groups of people.

 

Duties may include:

● Crafting lesson plans prior to each day of camp according to the Sleeping Giants Summer Camp Curriculum.
● Teaching children acting, movement and voice techniques in a fun, engaging, and accessible manner.
● Being attuned to each student’s needs and abilities, and ensuring that every camper has an enriching and positive experience.
● Assisting the campers in creating plays and characters, including leading creative writing exercises, imagination exercises, and teaching about story structure.
● Creating sound cues to enhance the final performance.
● Maintaining a safe environment, both physically and mentally, for learning and creativity.
● Working with the Summer Camp Supervisor to ensure all necessary supplies are acquired before they are needed.
● Managing first aid situations, and filing incident reports when necessary.
● Assisting with all elements of the final performance at the end of camp, including directing the show, helping to write the script, create and run the sound cues, and perform in the show if necessary.
● Reporting to the Managing Director on the successes and challenges of the camps, and assisting with future planning.

 

Schedule and Availability:

● This is a full time position at 35 hours/week for 8 weeks, from July 8 – August 30.
● Hours will be Monday – Friday from 8:30am – 4:30pm with an hour lunch break

 

Compensation:

● $25/hour

 

About Us:
Sleeping Giants Theatre is a new theatre school in Cochrane for kids and adults, providing quality acting and musical theatre training to our community. We run approximately 10 classes a semester for ages 5 and up, including a couple of adult classes. We also collaborate with local businesses to bring unique theatrical experiences to the town of Cochrane, such as dinner theatre, cabarets, and improv shows. Our mission is to bring quality theatre experiences and education to our community in order to inspire a love and appreciation for the theatre arts, and help kids on their journey to becoming confident, creative, and wonderful human beings.

This summer, we are running a number of exciting drama and musical theatre camps for kids. We are also preparing for a big fall season full of new drama classes and productions. We are looking for a team of theatre arts enthusiasts to help us connect to our community, bring in more students, and ensure that everyone has an incredible experience when they interact with our organization.

Interviews will be taking place in person during the week of May 27-31, if selected. Please indicate your availability on these days in your application (Zoom meetings can be arranged if needed). If you are not available either of those days, please still apply and we will do our best to find a time that works. There may also be a skills assessment or demonstration required, to be completed after the interview.
