Jobs (Edmonton): Designer/Instructor for Artists in Residence Program – Theatre Prospero

Seeking Designer/Instructor for Theatre Artists in Residence Program at C.J. Schurter Elementary School in Slave Lake, AB.

Dates: May 15th-16th, 21st-23rd, and 27th-31st

(May 14th, 20th, and 26th will be travel days to Slave Lake)

C. J. Schurter School is located in Slave Lake, Alberta, 250 km north of Edmonton. It is a kindergarten to grade 3 school, with approximately 100 students in each grade (400 students total).

The successful candidate will join Artists/Instructors Jennifer Spencer and Julie Golosky as they guide students who will improvise, write, act, dance, sing, paint, and draw stories about the wooded land, the lake, and the town around their Slave Lake School, and about the wild creatures and people inhabiting these places, over three weeks. On the last day of the residency, the students will share their work with the rest of the school and the community through performances and exhibitions, with Grades K-1 sharing in the morning and Grades 2-3 sharing in the afternoon on May 31st.

The focus on the visuals will be on opening students’ visions of the worlds their peers write and helping them to express themselves as best as possible. The Designer/Instructor will have latitude in steering the modes and media of expression, whether that is projection, lighting, painting, props, and/or costumes.

The successful candidate will be able to keep large numbers of children having fun creating in a focused way, meeting them where they are, and then showing them how to go further. They communicate well with other artist instructors, think independently, find opportunities, and empower students to do the same. They delegate well to teachers and older students and ride herd on a lot of work that happens quickly. The ability to deal with a little chaos is a prerequisite, even if that means it is dealt with by creating order.

The artist will work with students for ten days, 5-6 hours daily. The fee is $230 per day spent in the school. A meal per diem will be provided that aligns with Equity standards. A hotel room will be provided and booked by the company. The school and the company will cover materials that may need to be purchased by the artist, with the expenses reimbursed. Transportation will be provided to and from Slave Lake.

Applicants are encouraged to send their resumes, samples of their work, and either a cover letter or video cover letter to, with a submission deadline of April 28th or until a suitable candidate has been found. Interviews will be scheduled as soon as practical.
