Auditions (Edmonton): Carter and the Train – Staged Theatre Productions

Staged Theatre Productions is searching for actors for new play Carter and the Train being staged at Nextfest 2024 and again at the Edmonton Fringe Festival in 2024!

Carter is trapped in the tiny mountain town of Frightened Man’s Peak, forced to watch the train surrounding its jagged cliffs pass every day with no sign of stopping. But one day, he meets someone. Someone who might just teach him what it really means to be desperate, to escape, and to try to jump a damn train.

Actor 1
Carter: Quiet, smart, and very observant. 17-18. Desperate, but still thoughtful and meticulous.

Actor 2
Morgan: Crass, loud, and confident. Gothic punk style. 19-20.

Actor 3
Eagle: Wise older man. Speaks thoughtfully, and thinks before he says anything. Careful.
Willard: Jolly, acts younger than he is. Loyal and protective to Kathleen, quick to lighten the mood.
Croag: Very deep voiced, almost stern.
½ of Great Pieter: Great. Large. Over the top. Booming and animated voice.

Actor 4
Kathleen: Happy-go-lucky, strong singer. Feverishly avoidant of anything that isn’t just right.
Fletch ( + Daisette): High voiced, frantic (nasal and observant).
Annabeth: Dismal, lamenting, yet not really cold.
½ of Great Pieter: Great. Large. Over the top. Booming and animated voice.

Note: Roles will be cast regardless of gender, with the playwright being willing to make appropriate changes to reflect this. Ages are approximate.

The role of Actor 2 has already been cast.

Rehearsals will take place throughout late April and May for a run of the show at Nextfest in early June. After a brief break, rehearsals will pick back up throughout the summer for a second run of the show at the Edmonton Fringe Festival in mid-August. Scheduling is flexible, and will be based on the availability of the creative team.

Nextfest artists will receive a small honorarium and Nextfest artist perks (t-shirt, artist pass, festival pass, invite to Nextfest parties.) The Fringe run will operate on a profit share for the entire team.

Please email with a headshot (no need for a professional headshot, a photo of yourself is fine!) and theatrical resume. Those selected for an audition will be asked to attend a chemistry call on Zoom to read sides from the script (that will be provided over email) and chat with the creative team on April 13th or 14th. The deadline to apply is April 12th.

Additionally, if neither of these dates work for you but you’re interested in auditioning, please reach out and we can try to find a day that works for you. Don’t hesitate to contact us to let us know how we can best accommodate you!

Staged Theatre Productions is committed to equitable casting. If there are any barriers that may prevent you from being able to audition, please reach out to Grace Fitzgerald ( to see how we can help you out.
