Jobs (Edmonton): Designer/Instructor for Artists in Residence Program – Theatre Prospero

Jobs (Edmonton): Designer/Instructor for Artists in Residence Program – Theatre Prospero

Seeking Designer/Instructor for Theatre Artists in Residence Program at A.L. Horton Elementary school in Vegreville, AB, commuting daily 100 km East of Edmonton, January 8th, 15th-19th, and 22nd-26th.

The successful candidate will join Playwright/Story Instructor Amanda Samuelson, Dance/Movement Instructor Annikka Dobko and Director/Instructor Mark Henderson as they guide students in writing, dancing, acting and narrating 5 versions of transformational mythic stories, old or new, over 3 weeks. Each 5-10 minute piece will involve up to 3 classes, each performing a discreet portion. The pieces will mindfully mingle movement inspired by hockey and forms of dance the students try. The focus on the visuals will be on opening students’ visions of the worlds their peers write, and helping them to the best expression of that possible. The Designer/Instructor will have latitude in steering the modes and media of expression; whether that is projection, lighting, painting, props and/or costumes.

The successful candidate will be able to keep large numbers of children having fun creating in a focussed way, meeting them where they are and then showing them how to go further. They communicate well with other artist instructors, think on their feet, find out opportunities, and empower students to do the same. They delegate well to teachers and older students, and generally ride herd on a lot of work that happens in a short time. The ability to deal with a little bit of chaos is a prerequisite, even if that means it is dealt with by creating order.

The artist will work with students for the equivalent of eleven days, five hours per day. Fee is somewhat commensurate with experience, but not less than $200/day spent in school. Materials will be covered by the school and the company, but may need to be purchased by the artist with the expenses reimbursed. Transportation will be provided, and/or mileage to and from Vegreville paid for, depending on the logistics of each given day, and the capacity of attending artists’ vehicles.

Lighting and projection equipment are available from Theatre Prospero’s stock for use in the Residency.

Applicants are encouraged to send their resumes, samples of their work and either a cover letter or video cover letter to info@theatreprospero.ca, with a submission deadline of December 13th or until a suitable candidate has been found. Interviews will be scheduled as soon as practical.
