Call of Interest in Directing
Have you always been interested in directing and are looking for an exciting and unique opportunity? When you read a play, are you always digging for deeper meaning? Do you often find yourself wondering what goes into creating a new play, and are you looking for a way to get involved in that process? If you answered yes to any or all of these questions, we want you to submit to direct a Breaking Cover reading!
Breaking Cover is an innovative and interactive initiative created by Red Deer Players in conjunction with the Red Deer Public Library. An integral part of the process is the interaction between audience, director, playwright and cast, following the performance. This interaction provides the playwright with the opportunity to see how this new work is received and perceived by an audience, so they can continue to fine tune the script. The rehearsed readings of these new works are performed at the Snell Auditorium, at the Red Deer Public Library, at 4818 49 Street. Red Deer. Breaking Cover is open to playwrights across Alberta.
The responsibilities of a Breaking Cover Director is as follows
- selects the cast
- may participate as the person who reads the stage directions (can also cast someone to do this, at the director’s discretion)
- distributes scripts to cast members well enough ahead of the first rehearsal to allow for preparation
- prepares for, schedules and conducts a minimum of two rehearsals; includes the playwright in scheduling if the playwright so desires (role of the playwright at rehearsal is outlined below)
- works with the cast to identify which stage directions will be read aloud (typically focussed on those stage directions that are necessary in order for the audience to better visualize the action)
- works with the playwright on any script issues that arise during his/her rehearsal preparation
- embraces RDP’s vision that the preparation of the reading should strive to reach a quality standard that reflects positively on Red Deer Players, showcases the script and gives the playwright the benefits as intended by the program
- collaborates with the playwright in preparation for the post-read discussion (what questions will be asked, etc.)
- acts as moderator for the day of the reading; introduces the play, the playwright, the cast and conducts the post-read discussion; ensures the audience is given adequate opportunity to participate
