Call for Submissions (Edmonton): Directors for May 2024 and May 2025 – ELOPE Musical Theatre

Show Selection Production Selection
ELOPE Musical Theatre
May 2024 or 2025 Production
Request for Proposal – due August 11, 2023

If you would like to propose a show for our May 2024 or May 2025 slots at the Westbury Theatre, or have any questions, please contact Kara Little – ELOPE board member (elopemusicaltheatre@gmail.com). The 2025 production will only be selected if a suitable show is proposed, and the proposing team can commit until mid-2024 to begin production preparations. If no show for 2025 is found in this round of proposals, another RFP will be issued for the 2025 show in late 2023.

Below is an overview of the proposal process, including some guidelines and suggestions, as well as some questions that may come up during process.

ELOPE MUSICAL THEATRE
ELOPE Musical Theatre (Ensemble for Lyrical Operetta Productions Edmonton) has been producing musical productions in Edmonton for 40 years. Our aim is to provide musical theatre opportunities for a diverse cross section of the community, from theatre students and professionals to community players and people looking for a new challenge. ELOPE is known for producing large-scale, big cast productions. We are not limited to this and are open to other formats. Examples may be sharing an evening between 2 up and coming small theatre groups, each taking one act on a simple set, or a co-production with diverse and creative companies who haven’t had the opportunity to play in a space like the Westbury. Please feel free to send us your ideas! Show dates are April 30-May 11, 2024 and May 12-23, 2025.

WHAT TO PREPARE
Identify a Director, as well as Music Director and Choreographer, when applicable. Include relevant experience of team members.

  • A short, written summary of your vision for the show, cast and costume needs
  • Any extraordinary budgetary requirements
  • Overview of technical, rehearsal, and physical set needs, when applicable.
  • Script and/or score, if requested.

THE PROPOSAL
The Director (and any other team members desired) will meet with the Show Selection
Committee, either virtually or in person, to formally propose the production. The Committee will ask questions to get a complete picture of the vision and scope. The Committee will then decide whether to recommend the proposal to the ELOPE Board.

CRITERIA FOR APPROVAL

  • Production has broad-based appeal to community and ELOPE audience, and potentially an opportunity to expand our audience.
  • Appropriate for directors, cast, and crew available to ELOPE.
  • Likelihood of being profitable or revenue neutral.
  • Artistic value for community and ELOPE membership.
  • Provides volunteer opportunities

If the proposal is accepted, you will be contacted promptly and can begin working with ELOPE’s Production Manager to plan and schedule auditions, rehearsals, and fill any remaining roles on your team. A copy of the Production Manual will also be provided to the Team that provides a variety of vital information regarding job descriptions, auditions, and other relevant policies and procedures.
*Please note that all volunteers/cast for ELOPE must have a paid membership, this is $25 annually, unless volunteering at the Casino during the year of our bi-annual Casino – upcoming dates are November 21/22, 2023.

PROPOSAL GUIDE
Thank you for your interest in working with ELOPE Musical Theatre! This Proposal Guide is designed to help guide you through the proposal process. Please use the hints from this guide to strengthen your proposal.

Section I: Information.
Please fill out all information about your proposal. Please provide a digital copy of the perusal script if available.
It is not necessary to have worked with ELOPE previously. Please provide one copy of your resume, including many or all productions you have held a title in and any references.

Section II: Proposed Creative Team.
Hint: We understand that having a creative team in place prior to being awarded a show is difficult, and anything outside of the Director, Musical Director and show dependent – Choreographer are not required. Showing us that you have connections that would be interested in being on your team helps us to assess what role the board would have to play in assembling the creative team.
Please attach any other information you feel would be useful for the show selection committee.
