Production Description: Hold These Truths by Jeanne Sakata

Solo show (with onstage “kurogo” a silent stagehand)

During World War II, Gordon Hirabayashi, a student at the University of Washington in Seattle, fights the U.S government’s order to forcibly remove and mass incarcerate all people of Japanese ancestry on the West Coast. As he struggles to reconcile his country’s betrayal with his passionate belief in the U.S Constitution, Gordon begins a 50-year journey toward a greater understanding of America’s triumphs and a confrontation with its failures.

This production of Hold These Truths is an anti-racism initiative in partnership with the Edmonton Japanese Cultural Association, the University of Alberta Drama and Sociology departments, and the Prince Takamodo Japan Centre. We are committed to community representation in this production. We welcome submissions from artists of all genders, ethnicities, abilities and identities and encourage applicants of Japanese descent to apply.

Production Dates: rehearsals April 18-May 4, performance dates May 5-7, 2022. Additionally, a tour is tentatively scheduled for the month of May through Alberta and BC. Possible remount in Toronto in November 2022.

Projection/Set/Costume/Props Designer: This design assignment will need to tour easily. Minimal props/costume/set will be required. Projection design experience is required. Please submit relevant portfolio examples and website (if applicable)

Sound Designer: Please submit relevant portfolio examples and website (if applicable)

Production Dramaturg/language coach: we are looking for a dramaturg with connections to Japanese Canadian communities and some expertise in the Japanese language. This position can be done remotely if not based in Edmonton. Please submit your resume and if needed a letter sharing your background and interest in this project.

Technical Director and Tour tech: this position will require time prior to rehearsals to prepare tech riders for tour locations and organization of equipment rentals. This individual will also accompany the tour through Alberta and BC as the technician for the show. Please submit your resume.

Stage manager: (equity member) this individual should have experience with touring productions and have technical knowledge as they and the technician will be responsible for show setup. Please submit your resume.
