DARK at Fort Edmonton Park is seeking Scare Managers to join our DARK event team and bring terror to life in Edmonton’s river valley.

Job Type: Independent contractor (limited hours in July & August with more hours in September & October)
Estimated hour breakdown: July – 20hrs, August – 10hrs, September – 20 hrs, October – 100 hrs

Overview

DARK is a large-scale haunted attraction that has welcomed and entertained thousands of guests to Fort Edmonton Park over the past three years. For multiple nights during Edmonton’s shoulder season DARK offers the community an adrenaline pumping escape via roving performers, immersive haunts, scare zones, virtual escape rooms, paranormal investigations and more. DARK returns to Fort Edmonton Park for 13 nights of terror this October.

Scare Managers are an integral part of ensuring our haunts and scare zones are high-quality experiences by providing strong leadership to their team of Scare Actors. This role acts as a hybrid Stage Manager and Theatrical Coach. The Scare Manager will be responsible for coaching and supervising all Scare Actors and Haunt Support staff in the characters, narrative, and startle effects as outlined in each Haunt Script. They also assist with the audition process and are the key point of contact for our team of over 80 Scare Actors.

Key Responsibilities

  • Supervise up to 25 Scare Actors, and various Haunt Support team members
  • Provide direction and coaching to Scare Actors to bring out the best in their performance
  • Ensure the Haunt maintains optimal throughput by making sure all team members are on time, in approved costume, taking appropriate breaks and performing their roles correctly
  • Monitor their Haunts and act upon safety hazards and report immediately
  • Complete administrative tasks such as: end of night reports, monitoring and accounting Scare Actor sign-in sheets, in addition to other miscellaneous administrative tasks as required
  • Lead Scare Actor rehearsals and pre-show meetings
  • Support Scare Actor auditions
  • Work collaboratively with all members of the DARK team including technicians, wardrobe lead, and makeup artists
  • Maintain open and consistent communication with their Scare Actors, Haunt Support Staff, and the DARK Creative Team

Example Tasks

Pre-Production (July – September)

  • Attending auditions, table reads and training
  • Communicating important information to Scare Actors and responding to their questions and concerns
  • Assisting with training and rehearsing Scare Actors
  • Completing administrative tasks as needed

Production (October)

  • Attends pre-show huddles with the DARK Creative Team
  • Ensures the artistic quality of their Haunt by completing frequent Haunt walkthroughs, identifying potential hazards/risks and alerting appropriate parties if there are any concerns
  • Responsible for managing a team of Scare Actors and Haunt Support staff
  • Signs Scare Actors in and out for shifts, confirms Scare Actors are taking breaks and are on schedule
  • Holds Scare Actors accountable to the requirements of their role (makeup, wardrobe, character, and customer service)
  • Follows the chain of command and safety procedures during an emergency
  • Reports any concerns to a supervisor, especially in regards to safety
  • Completes end of night reports
  • Is accessible on radio and responsive to communication

Qualifications

  • Some secondary education in dramatic arts or equivalent
  • Proven experience in leading arts programs such as improv, musical theatre, general theatre, or experience in a leadership role at a haunted attraction
  • Ability to offer constructive artistic feedback
  • Must be a highly motivated and organized individual with strong administrative skills
  • Must be able to be flexible and thrive under pressure
  • Experience in leading arts youth programs is considered an asset

Service Remuneration: This is an independently contracted position that pays $20/hourly via submitted invoices.
