Event (Online): CHAT & CHEW – June 8 Zoom Gatherings

We want to invite you into an initiative that started up in Calgary in June 2020. A number of us see the importance of keeping equity, diversity, inclusion, and accessibility (EDIA) concerns front and centre as we go through so much change everywhere including the arts sector.

UPCOMING TOPIC

June 8 | Supporting Palestine
In the past month, the world has witnessed Palestinians no matter where they are located united in their demand for a Free Palestine, a people and land free from systems of oppression and settler colonialism. How can artists come together in support and solidarity of the Palestinian struggle for freedom and justice? What does an artistic and cultural project look like in this context?

Facilitated by Monda Mahmoud and Cesar Calla

Gatherings will be facilitated by the Cultural Instigators (CI)*. Once a month we will gather to collectively discuss topics of EDIA through an anti-racist lens to get grassroots ideas and actions going.

Despite the overwhelming weight of racism, what are the seeds of agency and resilience to be unearthed and replanted in ourselves and in our communities?. This month we gather for a collective conversation on this question that extends across artists and communities seeking equity. In celebration of Asian Heritage Month, we invite a few artist-citizens with lived experience to offer starting reflections.

Cultural Instigators (CI) is an initiative to support artists involved in building equity, diversity, inclusion and accessibility in their work to organize and to create artistic projects that build the community’s capacity to confront social issues, through an anti-racist framework. CI is funded by but not led by Calgary Arts Development.
