ABOUT THE PLAY:
Imperfect Symmetry is a full-length play set in mankind’s technologically cutting-edge future, where clones (Cs)—matured in growth tanks and birthed to serve as public body doubles for their socially elite originals (Os)—are at the forefront of a new kind of slavery. The Os and their respective Cs seem to coexist amicably: the clones serve their functions—attending galas, film premiers, maintaining appearances on social media, posing for the paparazzi, etc.,—while the originals provide the clones with all the comforts, vices, and distractions of modern living. But everything changes when the originals ask one clone to be a surrogate and carry a child for them. With the help of DOULA, a humanoid A.I. that serves as the clones’ caretaker and handler, the clones uncover a series of disturbing truths about the originals, the clones that preceded them, and the nature of their own existence, and will have to decide between a life of complacent privilege and the hard road to liberation.
- DOULA – A hyper-realistic, humanoid android programmed with an AI interface; caregiver for the Cs, and family friend to the Os. Priority will be given to non-binary/gender non-conforming actors.
- O2 – Female, 20s-30s An A-list film actress. Priority will be given to actors of colour, bearing a resemblance to C2*
- C2 – Female, 20s-30s. Clone of O2. Priority will be given to actors of colour, bearing a resemblance to O2*
*Given the nature of the play in that it deals with clones, this workshop will be looking to cast two actors of similar build and height bearing a loose resemblance to one another in the roles of O2 and C2. (We encourage paired submissions!)
Jupiter Theatre will be workshopping a staged reading of Imperfect Symmetry, a new play written and directed by Constantine X. Anastasakis, in the West Village Theatre from March 22-28.
To submit your interest, please email your performing resume and headshot to Andrew G. Cooper at [email protected] with the subject line “IMPERFECT SYMMSTRY AUDITION.” Please indicate which role(s) you would like to be considered for
The workshop will be filmed in the theatre over the last three days in the space (March 26 – 28, 2021) and a limited audience MAY be permitted to attend (in accordance with provincial guidelines and restrictions surrounding COVID-19). Our plan is for the filmed workshop to be available to stream via Jupiter Theatre’s website for a limited run and will be used as archival footage for future grant applications. Rehearsals will take place primarily over Zoom beginning in March (two 4-hour slots/week.) For the week of the workshop, actors will be required to be in attendance for in-person sessions at the West Village Theatre (one 4-hour slot/day).
We are flexible at this time as to what the auditions will look like, but they will not be taking place in person. We will be conducting auditions via video call, phone, and will also be accepting video submissions. Those who we would like to see for the auditions will be given the instructions and materials for the auditions. If you have accessibility needs that we should be aware of or if this application process is a barrier to you, please reach out to us Artistic Producer Andrew G. Cooper at 587-222-1676 or [email protected].
Performers engaged for Imperfect Symmetry will receive a guaranteed honorarium of $500 for this workshop process. Jupiter Theatre is not engaging CAEA members at this time. We are only accepting submissions from Calgary-based artists at this time.
Jupiter Theatre encourages submissions from diverse artists of all backgrounds, regardless of race, color, national origin, age, religion, creed, disability, sexual orientation, or gender identity. We welcome applicants to inform us of their pronouns if they wish, and to include details about how their identity informs their practice and needs as they feel comfortable.
In accordance with our Anti-Racism/Anti-Oppression Statement and our Response to the 35//50 Initiative, we are actively seeking submissions from IBPOC individuals. With our ongoing commitment to inclusivity and accessibility as part of our mandate, we also strongly encourage submissions from the LGBTQ2+ and disabled communities.
DISCLAIMER: The play contains course language, sexuality, partial nudity, violence, and mature themes. For the purposes of this workshop, the staging will not require.
Rehearsals and workshop dates are currently pending due to provincial guidelines for the COVID-19 pandemic. It is our hope that we will have meetings and some rehearsals in May via Zoom and then meet in person with a rigorous COVID-19 safety plan in place for the week of the workshop. This project will be in full compliance of Alberta Health Services in regards to the pandemic. Because of this, there is a possibility that the project may be delayed or rescheduled.
