Call for Submissions (Edmonton): The Grindstone Theatre is seeking Submissions for Live Stream & Limited Capacity In-Person Programming

Grindstone Comedy Theatre & Bistro

Do you have a show idea? Then come on down to the Grindstone! We are seeking fresh new acts within the world of Theatre: Improv, Stand-Up, Sketch Comedy, Variety shows, Magic, Burlesque, Clown, Musical Comedy or pretty much anything that’s funny. We understand that Covid-19 has severely limited social interaction, so to combat that we have installed dual PTZ (Pan/Tilt/Zoom) cameras to bring your act to life in living rooms across Alberta (and beyond)! For those still interested in the magic of live theatre, our doors are open to a limited capacity of masked patrons who will be seated within their cohorts.

About us:

Grindstone Theatre is a non-profit Edmonton-based theatre company established in 2011 by Founder and Artistic Director, Byron Martin. Grindstone Theatre owns and operates its own venue: The Grindstone Comedy Theatre & Bistro in Old Strathcona. Grindstone Theatre is most well-known for their improvised musical The 11 O’clock Number! but also produces mainstage plays and musicals, produces Blackout Sketch Comedy, provides corporate entertainment, runs public classes, offers school workshops, school performances and free monthly events such as The Open Improv Jam. We believe that theatre can change lives for the better; for those who participate in the performing arts, for our audiences and for our community. Join us in making our community a better place through the arts.

How it works:

Our theatre is based on the Fringe venue model with multiple shows each night back to back produced by individual artists or ensembles.

Once dates are agreed upon and a contract is signed, a $100 deposit is required to confirm your performance slot. After that, you will provide us with your personalized production information (graphics, ticket prices, bio, cast list) and we’ll sell your tickets through our box office. We then leave it up to you to market and promote your show!

  • All shows are limited to 1 hour with showtimes starting at (7pm, 9pm or 11pm Wednesday-Sunday)
  • Grindstone will provide a Theatre Technician to assist with light/sound cues and tear tickets at the door
  • Grindstone will provide Box office staffing for each performance

Who are we looking for:

We are looking for dedicated Artists to fill weekly or monthly slots with performances catered to a live stream and limited in person audience. We strongly encourage BIPOC and LGBTQIA+ Artists and Producers to apply. Priority will be given to acts under the “Comedy” realm, but we are open to a variety of different acts. If you have an idea, we want to hear it!
