Call for Submissions (Calgary): Jupiter Theatre Seeks Directors for (exp)lore

(exp)lore is the first installment in Jupiter Theatre’s new Digital Audio Theatre Experience, a podcast to be enjoyed in the community while social distancing. This anthology of site-specific stories takes an imaginative dive into the past and future of Calgary’s inner city.

We are seeking directors to artistically lead individual episodes for round two of this new audio theatre project. Jupiter Theatre encourages submissions from diverse artists of all backgrounds, regardless of race, color, gender, national origin, age, religion, creed, disability, sexual orientation, gender identity, or gender expression. We are actively seeking submissions from underrepresented communities including BIPOC and LGBTQ2+ artists.

Rehearsal and recording for this section of the project will take between August 3rd and September 12th, 2020 or September 13th and October 9th, 2020. You do not need to be available for the entire period to be considered, each episode of the series will be rehearsed and recorded on independent schedules. Please notify us if you have any conflicts with these dates. Given current public health guidelines, we anticipate rehearsals will be done online, but this is subject to change.

Directors are asked to submit a short artistic statement in regards to the project. This statement should be one page or less and should include the following:
1. Why you are interested in site-specific storytelling and the audio theatre format.
2. Genres of speculative fiction you’re curious about working with and why (i.e. urban fantasy, magical realism, cosmic horror, science fiction, alternate history, futurism, etc.).
3. Questions and ideas that you’re exploring in your artistic practice at this time.

To submit, please email the above statement and the following to Andrew G. Cooper at with the subject line “DIRECTOR SUBMISSION”.
1. Your resume as a director.
2. A directing portfolio or example of previous work (images, audio, video, etc.).

Please attach files as separate .pdf files. If these submission guidelines are a barrier to you for any reason, please reach out to us to discuss. Directors will receive a guaranteed fee for rehearsal and recording. We are only accepting submissions from Calgary-based artists at this time.

DEADLINE TO SUBMIT FOR THIS ROUND: Monday, July 20th, 2020 at 5:00 pm.
