Classes (Calgary): Spring Shakespeare – Monologues

Classes will be devoted to Shakespeare monologues and soliloquys. Together we will explore personal connection, the actor/audience relationship, balancing thought and emotion in performance and invigorating the creative imagination in order to reveal character psychology and balance Shakespeare’s intentions with your unique connection to the text.

Take this course if you:

•Want to access a more authentic personal connection to character development
•Want to deepen your understanding of how to approach heightened text
•Want to explore new ways of accessing imagery and emotional connection in your work
•Want to dive into some new text (or old text in new ways!) because you love Shakespeare
•Want to find the Shakespearean monologue that really showcases your unique gifts and abilities
•Want to explore working on material outside of your usual wheelhouse
•Want to know an audition ready Shakespeare piece (or two!) in your artistic arsenal

Space is limited in order to ensure each participant receives personal attention and the most rewarding experience possible.

All participants must 18 or older.

Iam Coulter (she/her)- Actor: Iam is an actor, director, and teaching artist, specializing in Shakespeare performance. Performance experience includes shows with Citadel Theatre, Shakespeare & Company, Theatre Calgary, The Shakespeare Company, Vertigo Mystery Theatre, and Alberta Theatre Projects. During her 8 years as artistic producer of The Shakespeare Company, (Calgary) Iam developed programming from a summer tour (2004) into a critically acclaimed and award-winning full season in its current performance home (Vertigo Theatre Centre). Since 2012 Iam has trained with Shakespeare & Company (Lenox, MA) where she discovered a passion for teaching, and for using Shakespeare’s language to facilitate growth, healing and empowerment. In 2019 Iam directed the Calgary premiere of Shakespeare in Love for Morpheus Theatre and debuted her clown persona at the Calgary Clown Festival. She is the founder of the theatre company Iam Shakespeare, and will be touring her solo show titled: Desperate Shakespeare to the 2020 Edmonton Fringe Festival.

What former students have to say about working with Iam Coulter*:
I think the trademarks of a truly impactful teacher are flexibility and personalization – the ability to tailor an experience for a student regardless of that student’s previous experience. Iam Coulter is that, and so much more. Whether you are brand new to Shakespeare, or whether you are well-versed, Iam Coulter will give you an experience personalized entirely for you and what you are looking for. Deeply passionate, infectiously giving, and highly intelligent, the best advice I could give any artist: GO. NOW
