Call for Submissions (Calgary): Blue Light – A Festival of Social Media Performance

For their 10th anniversary season, Verb Theatre is proud to present The Blue Light Festival!

What is the festival:

The Blue Light Festival is an online performance festival experienced through the mediums of Instagram, Facebook, Snapchat and beyond. The festival will feature nine “plays” each performed using a social media platform online. We are seeking proposals from Calgary-based artists, collectives, and companies interested in creating a performance in the festival. We welcome proposals for performances of any genre, style, length, or topic. We encourage inventiveness, experimentation and risk-taking. Be bold. Artist of all disciplines are welcome to apply!

What do you need to submit?

Social media allows us to tell stories with flexibility. We need a (relatively) clear idea of what your piece is like; are you telling the story of your pet in the style of a drama? Are you doing a vlog-style modernization of Othello across multiple Instagram accounts? A by-request improv show done through social media stories? A high school drama story that uses Tik Tok, Twitter, and Instagram? We are open to various kinds of concepts. Anything you can think of.

We encourage that each project have an adventurous use of time – for example, a snapchat-driven story may take place over 8 hours while the audience follows live. A Instagram-Live stream may take place over one hour.

If you already have a team of folks ready to work with, amazing! If you need help finding actors, a stage manager, a camera technician etc. We

One of the best parts of this Festival is that you only need a phone with a camera!
Please fill out the Google Form below to submit.

Rehearsal period:

The festival will be presented on Verb Theatre’s social media (or affiliated accounts) in April 2020. The nature of each project will decide what the rehearsal schedule looks like – the Verb Theatre team will be there to support you in whatever way we can.

Each proposal chosen to be in the festival will be paid $450 to be spent on artist wages or production budget. If you have a team of people, the person submitting the proposal will handle how this fee is managed and dispersed (subject to approval by Verb Theatre). Each project will also be provided with complimentary tickets to Verb Theatre’s productions of Blink and Grounded April 23rd – May 9th 2020.
