Event (Edmonton): The YEG Performing Arts Accessibility Ad Hoc Group Hosting A Series of Focus Groups


The Edmonton performing arts community believes that the arts are for everyone. In 2019, a group of performing arts companies came together to tackle the question of how to make their work accessible to as many people as possible. To do that we need to find out what kinds of accessibility are the most useful to people in Edmonton.
The performing arts companies engaged two researchers (Brooke Leifso and Kelsie Acton) and we are hosting focus groups to find more in-depth stories of barriers to performing arts:

Performing Arts Accessibility Focus Groups

Co-hosted by the Nina Haggerty Centre for the Arts
9225 118 Ave
November 29th – 1-3 pm with artists and people with developmental disabilities
November 29th – 3-5 pm with artists who experience disability 
Co-hosted by Gateway Association with Caregivers and Adults with Autism

December 3rd – 7-9 pm
Co-hosted by Fringe Theatre
Studio Theatre, 10330 84th Ave 
December 1st – 1-3 pm open for anyone who experiences barriers to seeing the performing arts (ASL interpreted)
December 5th – 5-7 pm with Deaf organizations (ASL interpreted) 
December 7th – 1-3 pm open for anyone from the Deaf, deaf, Hard of Hearing communities to tell us more about their access needs (ASL interpreted)
Co-hosted by the Pride Centre
December 11th – 5:30-7:30 pm – with a focus on the LGBTQIA community that experiences disability and barriers to the performing arts.
Light refreshments will be provided at all focus groups. Please email, call or text with dietary restrictions. All venues are barrier-free with wheelchair accessible bathrooms. 
DATS and parking per venue:
The Nina – main door on 118 Avenue, street parking
Fringe Theatre – main door on 84 Ave, near the library, street parking also there
Gateway – DATS entrance and parking are on the east side of the building (by Cafe Linnea)
Pride Centre – DATS and parking is at the front of the building
