Casino money is a major component of Ghost River Theatre’s overall budget. For two days, we will be at the Deerfoot Casino staffing the volunteer positions listed below. This is a meaningful opportunity to support brave, bold new theatre in Calgary. Your time at a casino shift makes a HUGE fiscal impact! Casino funding helps us fly in THE HIGHEST STEP IN THE WORLD, travel beyond the veil in THE INTUITION PROJECT, and tackle the eighth wonder of the world in GIANT.

And if volunteering at a casino sounds scary, don’t worry! You will be supervised the entire time and trained every step of the way. Tasks have been designed specially for volunteers with little-to-no casino experience.

To show our appreciation, all volunteers receive a free meal and snacks during their shift! Casino shifts are also are a great chance to meet the theatre community! You’ll see lots of your favourite theatre folk pitching in.

General Requirements for Casino Volunteers:

  • Must bring valid, government-issued picture ID
  • Able to pass a security clearance check
  • Able to hear, see, speak or have an attendant with these capabilities
  • Able to manoeuvre in the casino facility for the duration of the shift
  • Able to function in a sometimes noisy environment
  • Be a minimum of 18 years of age

Great, I’ve Signed Up, Now What?

  • Arrive on time for your shift
  • Show ID at the door, ask security where the volunteers check in
  • Sign in with your ID and get a volunteer name tag
  • You will receive training for your position
  • Work the position

Volunteers MUST NOT: be paid; play casino games or gaming terminals during their group’s casino event; consume liquor or illicit substances during their group’s casino event; cash cheques or extend credit; or possess gaming chips.


General Manager: Supervise all aspects of the casino. The general manager works closely with the casino facility games manager.

Banker: Supervise the cash cage. This includes documenting all cash cage transactions, ensuring the security of the chips and cash in the cash cage, and holding the cashiers accountable for the chips and cash they manage while on duty. The banker reports to the general manager and is responsible for cashiers and chip runners.

Cashier: The cashier’s role is similar to a bank teller’s. The cashier interacts directly with casino players. Any transactions over $200 must be witnessed by the general manager, banker or cash cage advisor. The cashier reports to the banker and works with the general manager, banker, financial control supervisor, advisor, and casino players.

Chip Runner: The chip runner opens and closes tables, delivers chip fills from the banker to game tables, delivers credits from game tables to the banker and may assist the general manager with other duties. The chip runner reports to the banker and works with the general manager and gaming table personnel.

Count Room Supervisor: The count room supervisor is responsible for all count room staff and procedures. The count room supervisor reports to the general manager, and works with the general manager and banker. This position is responsible for the sorters, counters and amalgamator.

Count Room: Sorts all cash or chips by denomination, counts the sorted cash or chips, by denomination, records the number of bills, coins, and chips counted, verifies the cash or chips counted and groups them into bundles, and summarizes the cash and chips with the count room supervisor.
