for our brand new musical, The Big Bright!
About the Company:
Cathexis Theatre is an independant Edmonton based theatre company dedicated to creating brave, eccentric, new works!
About the Show:
Jax and her two best friends live in an eccentric, tight knit, isolated community. When Jax’s grandmother comes back from the “Big Bright” they deem that she has lost her essence. Against her grandmother’s wishes Jax and her friends head to the Big Bright to retrieve it. As the destructive atmosphere threatens everything they are and believe in the three friends start to understand why their ancestors fled.
Characters:
JAX: (Female identifying) A passionate, adventurous, tenacious granddaughter and friend. She
restlessly waited for her day to become the Forager of her community and becomes frustrated when her grandmother won’t allow her to take over. When Jax deems that her grandmother has lost her essence in The Big Bright she sets off to retrieve it.
YO-YO: (Female identifying): A protective, curious, rule loving best friend to Jax and Pog. She lost her sister to The Big Bright and is often torn between curiosity and concern. While in The Big Bright Yo-yo becomes intoxicated by various perfumes. (Note: this role includes making out with a perfume bottle.)
POG: (Male identifying): An aloof, imaginative, anxious best friend to Jax and Yo-Yo. While in
The Big Bright Pog starts to devalue his friends and becomes obsessed with protein shakes.
GREYMA: (Female identifying): A strong, brave, playful grandmother to Jax. She loves frogs, tells elaborate stories and routinely ventures to The Big Bright to forage items for the community.
JORDAN: (Male identifying): A timid, hopeful, intelligent ally to Jax, Yo-Yo, and Pog.
GREYMA AD: (Female identifying): A manipulative, outrageous, alternating advertisement that steals Greyma’s essence.
AD 1, 2, 3 (Non gender specific): A manipulative, outrageous, alternating advertisement.
CITIZEN (Non gender specific): An oblivious resident of The Big Bright.
GRUMPY GUY (Male identifying): An angry resident of The Big Bright and owner of a dollar store.
BUSINESS MACHINE (Non gender specific): A business focused “machine” that programs and evaluates the ads.
*This is a seven person cast so GREYMA/GREYMA AD and JORDAN/GRUMPY GUY/CITIZEN/BUSINESS MACHINE/AD 3 will be double cast.
About the Audition:
Auditions will be held on Wednesday, May 8th from 7PM-10PM at the University of Alberta FAB 2-43.
Please prepare a monologue and a song from a musical theatre production. Please bring a back track either saved on your phone or on a USB. You may also be asked to read sides from the script.
Trained actors will be given priority.

Rehearsals:
Rehearsals will start on May 29th and be on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday evenings from 6:00PM-10:00PM at the University of Alberta.
Performance:
The Big Bright will premiere at the 2019 Edmonton International Fringe Festival from August 15th-August 25th.
