What’s On (Edmonton): World Premiere of Slight of Mind – Theatre Yes

Icarus Airlines: Taking you to places you can only imagine.

We have longed for flight since the beginning of time, but what – or who – awaits us in the vast expanse of the beyond? Step aboard Icarus Airlines for an adventure that bends the rules of space and time. From sky to sea, from opulent lobbies to hidden caverns, this roving production will take you on an intimate and unparalleled journey to the truth at the core of every myth.

Edmonton’s own Theatre Yes, in collaboration with the Citadel Theatre, is proud to premiere their latest innovation: three tales of human flight intertwined into one unforgettable piece by award-winning local playwright Beth Graham. Slight of Mind re-imagines the mythic feats of three legendary figures: Amelia Earhart, the dauntless pilot whose disappearance while circumnavigating the globe is one of the most enduring mysteries in aviation history; Valentina Tereshkova, the Russian cosmonaut who became the first woman in space; and Icarus, the boy from ancient Greek lore who famously flew too close to the sun.

Flight attendants from Icarus Airlines will guide the audience to various spaces in the Citadel Theatre complex. This intimate promenade performance features two distinct pathways through which the performance can be viewed. Audience members will be split into two groups and taken to the sites in different orders, making each performance experience truly unique. Bringing the world of this play to life is no small feat. Slight of Mind will feature set designs by Daniela Masellis and Tessa Stamp, sound design and installation by Gary James Joynes, video and visual design by Ian Jackson, and costume design by Brian Bast.

Theatre Yes is renowned for their hyper-immersive productions, including The National Elevator Project, which featured 16 micro-plays performed in working elevators around Edmonton; ANXIETY, which led audiences to a remote warehouse full of secrets; and VISCOSITY, a performance installation about the people on the frontlines of Alberta’s oil industry.

Slight of Mind runs March 27 to April 14, 2019, at the Citadel Theatre, everywhere except on the stages. Guests will check in at Box Office and be directed to the secret starting place of the production. Tickets are available at www.citadeltheatre.com and 780.425.1820. Tickets start at just $30 plus fees and GST.

***Slight of Mind requires audiences to be on their feet. You will need to stand and/or lean to watch performances, as well as walk to locations in the Citadel complex and climb stairs. Very limited seating is available for specific portions of the piece.***
