ABOUT THE PLAY:
A mythical parable, a story of the power of women and a heartfelt love letter to Rodeo Life. This world premiere play tells the story of one young Cowgirl’s journey to compete in the Calgary Stampede. Chatterton’s newest play Cowgirl Up is a magical, irreverent new work that approaches rodeo culture from a whole new perspective, examining the unique challenges faced by women.
ROLES / RANGES:
NOTE: Actors applying for these roles should be in strong physical condition and be excellent movers. Please indicate if you have dance, circus, gymnastics or any other physical training on your submission.
CASSIDY: Female – (Late 20’s) Barrel racer. Loner, determined, got fire in her. Strong and independent but also vulnerable due to her Gran’s recent death.
STARBRIGHT: Female – (20-40) CASSIDY’s horse, has a very heightened way of speaking, almost beat poetry. Must be comfortable with speaking poetic text. Speaks with horse inflections.
JED: Male – (Late 20’s) Professional Cowboy, a tie down roper. A ladies’ man. Can do a proper two-step.
Note: This actor also plays the Rodeo Announcer and other rodeo horses.
A copy of the script is available to preview at the Alberta Theatre Projects reception area (enter through Stage Door – 220 9 Ave. SE) during regular business hours: Monday to Friday 9am – 5pm.
