Call for Submissions (Banff): Wardrobe Technician Practicum

Overview

Practicum participants will experience one-on-one mentorship from our professional team who will guide them through the production process. Practicums will gain exposure to all creative Theatre departments with the opportunity to exchange ideas and gain insight into these departments through workshops and forums. Stitching, dressing, and wardrobe management placements are available.

Participants will observe and participate in the creative production process from interpretive design concept through creative development to realization. The program will include analysis of all areas of the production schedule with emphasis on the importance of the participant’s role as an effective member of the collaborative process.

What does the program offer?

The Wardrobe Technician Practicum provides intense immersion into all aspects of wardrobe, with departmental crossovers and collaborative creativity. Past workshops have included tailoring, millinery, boots and shoes, dyeing, jewelry, corsetry, draping, flat pattern drafting, sewing machine maintenance, wigs and makeup, prosthetics, masks, thermoplastics, life drawing, lighting, welding, and knots.

Responsibilities are determined by a participant’s initiative and the nature of the demands of the production being worked on. After initial training and practice, participants will have access to all costume shop machines and equipment.

Who should apply?

Successful applicants should have a sound understanding of sewing construction and techniques. Post-secondary costume studies or related work experience would be beneficial.

Applicants must be self-motivated, organized, and enthusiastic. Applicants should possess a willingness to learn through curiosity and be receptive to working cooperatively with all areas of wardrobe during productions. Knowledge of historical costume would be advantageous.
