Call for Submissions (Banff): Technical Direction Performing Arts Practicum – Banff Centre for Arts and Creativity

Overview

Participants will assist the technical director(s) in coordinating technical activities related to our Performing Arts department’s performance venues and production shops. Participants are involved in planning, scheduling, and systems creation, including the use of a variety of computer programs.

An emphasis is placed on the use of CADD programs to create/maintain current plans and sections of all Banff Centre shows, and to possibly develop scenic construction drawings. Participants provide assistance to the technical director(s) and, depending on ability and experience, may assume supervised responsibility for the technical direction of Banff Centre productions.

What does the program offer?

The practicum program is centered on learning the core skills required to be a Technical Director. Our practicums are responsible for the smooth delivery of the production needs for all Banff Centre Performing Arts shows, events, and conferences.

As an integral part of Banff Centre training process, practicums will experience one-on-one mentorship and coaching from our experienced professional staff who will guide them through production processes. Practicums will leave Banff Centre with marketable skills and the confidence and competence to step up into roles as specialized professionals in their field. Our alumni can be found both nationally and internationally working at opera, dance, music, and theatre companies and training at university and colleges; including Cirque Du Soleil, the Stratford and Shaw Festivals, the National Theatre School, the National Arts Centre, the National Ballet of Canada, and the Canadian Opera Company.

Much of the training material is show-driven; practicums can expect to work on a wide array of shows including theatre, dance, opera, and music as presented by Banff Centre. Practicums can expect to work alongside a range of artists at various points in their careers.

Who should apply?
