Who should apply:

Rozsa Arts Management Program (RAMP) alumni and Arts leaders working in arts organizations who are interested in enhancing their leadership skills in a challenging, yet collaborative and supportive environment. The environment will provide a safe place to have meaningful discussions and try new things. Deadline to apply: November 30, 2018

Applicants should:

  • Be in a leadership role or have leadership experience
  • Be committed to their personal and professional development
  • Be an advocate for their organization and the arts
  • Be willing to share and collaborate with others to create a more vibrant arts sector
  • Be eager to learn, be gracious in sharing and desire to explore possibilities
  • Believe in the contribution of the arts sector to the well being and effective functioning of society.

Tuition (2019): The Rozsa Foundation subsidizes tuition for participants working for non-profits/registered charities. The REAL participant pays the remaining tuition. Tuition for 2019 is: $1200/person

Additional Granting: In addition to the subsidy that the Rozsa Foundation offers, you may also have the option of applying for the Canada-Alberta Job Grant – a funding opportunity for employers to develop their employees. The Canada Alberta Job Grant can fund up to 2/3 or your program costs to a maximum of $10,000 per individual or $300,000 per organization.

The arts sector is constantly evolving and changing, creating exciting opportunities for arts managers to adapt, adjust, and hone their leadership skills. Being an effective administrator is no longer enough to take arts organizations to the next level. There is a requirement to think differently, apply business skills and knowledge to the arts sector, and build bridges to develop stronger communities. This requires an understanding of how to strengthen society’s trust in arts organizations, utilize business development skills to build audiences, supporters and networks, effectively manage a multitude of stakeholders, and communicate effectively about the contribution of the arts to society.

The Rozsa Executive Arts Leadership (REAL) program provides a unique context for experienced arts leaders to take their skills to a higher level. The interactive learning environment – where participants learn from each other, the facilitator, and guest speakers – utilizes hands-on experiential learning and peer-to-peer mentoring techniques to increase capacity and capability.

The Rozsa Foundation is uniquely positioned to provide this program as the final step in its arts management curriculum. This program has been developed in conjunction with Transcend Management Advisors Inc., a Calgary-based leadership development firm specializing in preparing leaders for future challenges.

What does the program offer?

The REAL program includes seven in-person sessions of 3.5 hours each. Each session is highly interactive with participants playing multiple roles: learner, facilitator, instructor, and mentor. Each REAL program session is related to one aspect of being an arts leader, with each session building on the previous session. Topics that will be covered include, but are not limited to: trust, leadership, board development, communication, business development, and human resources. This four-month program features individual, small and large group work, applied learning, reflective practice, and journaling. The facilitator, Dr. Wilma Slenders, will lead the sessions. She will be joined by guest presenters and speakers from both the arts and business community in order to further challenge participants’ thinking.

The REAL program is designed to:

  • Help arts leaders explore concepts that are critical at higher levels of leadership: trust, relationship building, effective communication, managing teams, volunteers and other stakeholders, and business development.
  • Facilitate and help participants to take their leadership to a higher level.
  • Challenge conventional arts management thinking by incorporating business practices and thinking to determine what is applicable and can be applied to arts organizations.
  • Build relationships and network that will help them and their organizations be more successful.
