Call for Submissions (Edmonton): Artist in Residence – Action for Healthy Communities

Artist in Residence 2019 – Request for Proposals

Action for Healthy Communities

The Edmonton Arts Council is inviting artists residing in Edmonton to submit a proposal to become an artist-in-residence hosted by Action for Healthy Communities.
The successful artist will commence duties in early 2019, for an anticipated six-month period (the terms are negotiable/flexible).
Action for Healthy Communities is a registered charity serving the needs of youth, seniors, and adults in Greater Edmonton. They provide literacy and essential skills training, business development, and settlement supports for newcomers. This work happens in various locations around Edmonton, including through visits to local schools.
The artist-in-residence will develop a body of artistic work while interacting with the staff, program participants, and the broader community in and around Action for Healthy Communities. The artist will ideally reflect their residency experience through their work, and potentially mentor the artistic expression of interested staff and community. Interaction with children and youth in educational settings is likely.
The primary location is in the Action for Healthy Communities office, which is on 113 Street near 106 Avenue. Workspaces are in an office setting. Final studio space will be determined based on the type of artist selected, but no available spaces will support noisy, large-scale, or environmentally hazardous work. Therefore, a visual or media artist, a writer, or storyteller are most likely to be successful candidates.
This is a full-time-equivalent opportunity, with the artist expected to commit to regular working hours over the course of approximately six months. The artist is also expected to produce and present at least one public showing of work or performance in their field.
A panel that includes representatives of Edmonton’s arts community, the Edmonton Arts Council, and Action for Healthy Communities will review the proposals and select the artist-in-residence following an interview process. Emphasis will be placed on finding an individual with strong artistic work and good potential to succeed in producing artwork in the available space and timeframe. Training or experience in immigrant settlement issues or community development are potentially valuable, but not required.
The Edmonton Arts Council is committed to equity in all aspects of its work and invites proposals from all interested artists.
To respond to this call, interested artists should provide a proposal letter and resume/C.V. In their proposal they should refer to some of the following items:
  • The focus of their previous artistic work, and current topics or areas of artistic interest
  • Their public exhibition or presentation record
  • Previous experience engaging in artistic work with and around non-artists
  • Potential avenues of artistic exploration for this residency
  • Examples of the artist’s experience in organizing and mounting a successful
  • showing of artwork
The candidate should provide 10-15 examples of their recent artwork, using an appropriate digital format, preferably a link to an applicant’s website, Dropbox, or other online resource.
The Edmonton Arts Council has reserved $27,000 for artist remuneration, as well as $3,000 for supplies. The final schedule and amounts are subject to negotiation of the time and scope of the project within that budget.
This initiative is sponsored by the Edmonton Arts Council and the City of Edmonton.
Please respond with the noted cover letter, proposal, and appropriate support material by December 15, 2018 to info@edmontonarts.ca. Responses may also be sent or delivered to the Edmonton Arts Council offices in hard copy:
Prince of Wales Armouries, 2nd Floor
 10440 108 Avenue
 Edmonton, AB T5H 3Z9
Hours: 9:00 am to 4:30 pm, Monday to Friday
