Volunteer (Edmonton): Actors needed for voice and speech training study

ARE YOU A PROFESSIONALLY TRAINED ACTOR/MUSICAL THEATRE PERFORMER? EVER WONDER WHAT ALL THE STUFF YOU DO TO TRAIN YOUR VOICE DOES TO YOUR BRAIN?

We are looking for 40 volunteers to participate in a study investigating the effects of Voice and Speech Training on the brain.

All Participants must:

  • Be healthy adults over the age of 18
  • Have completed a minimum of one year of post-secondary professional actor training since 1998
  • Have a minimum of 100 hours of formal Voice and Speech training in their lifetime
  • Be right handed
  • Have normal hearing and normal to corrected vision
  • Commit to participate in 2 Electroencephalography sessions at the Attention and Action lab at the University of Alberta. Once between September 17-29 and once between November 25th December and 17th

In exchange for your participation all participants will receive:

  • A $5 Starbucks gift card each time you visit the Attention and Action lab
  • A 90-minute group voice workshop after the completion of the study in appreciation of your time
    20 participants:
  • Participants should be willing and able to attend a minimum of six complimentary voice-focused Professional Development sessions through Azimuth’s Performance lab between October 7th and December 2nd (Sundays from 11:00-12:30pm). These participants will receive complimentary admission to Azimuth Performance Lab for the duration of the study

Your participation in the study will help to illuminate if and how Voice and Speech training influences our brains. My goal is to understand the collateral benefits that voice training has to offer beyond the stage while helping performers expand their vocal capacity and creativity in performance. While participation in the professional development sessions will not be anonymous, survey and EEG test results are anonymous and confidential.

If you’d like to find out more information on how to participate, please contact the research team by email at mindfulvoicestudy@gmail.com with the subject line ‘Potential Study Subject’. Please be in touch by October 6, 2018.
