The Lab: April 9 – 28, 2019
The Retreat: February 17 – March 3, 2019
The 46th edition of the Banff Playwrights Lab will provide each writer with a residency tailored to their specific needs with the goal of nurturing, challenging, and inspiring the next phase of work on their play. We’re very pleased to welcome Beatriz Pizano to this year’s artistic team as the Lab’s Senior Playwright in Residence.
In 2019, our focus will be on ‘large scale projects’ – plays that are large in ideas, ambitions, requirements and/or casts. In an ecology where playwrights often feel that large scale works will rarely, if ever, make it to production, the Lab wants to cultivate a conversation about the strategies that writers, dramaturgs, producers and collaborators use to create and support these works.
As a recent Globe and Mail review commented, “…the unchanged struggle in Canadian theatre [is that there are] too few companies with the resources and willingness to produce a 13-character script unless based on a ‘classic.‘” The 2019 Lab aims to nurture new works that grapple with scale, and explore ways to move such projects toward production.
The Playwrights Lab is based in Banff, Alberta, and work supported by the program appears across Canada and beyond. During the 2018-19 season, more than 30 recent Lab projects will be produced and tour in Canada, the US, the UK, and Denmark
