The Citadel Theatre in Edmonton, Alberta is looking for a highly-organized team player who thrives in a fast-paced environment to join our Production team. This is a full-time, year-round position.
The Citadel is a very active, not-for-profit theatre producing a season which includes a Mainstage series of six plays, Beyond the Stage Series, and, assorted other projects as they arise from season to season. We support a vibrant theatre school and an active new play development program. Our facilities are available for rental by other arts organizations and community groups.
The Citadel complex includes:
- The Shoctor Theatre – a proscenium stage with 686 seats
- The Maclab Theatre – a thrust stage with 685 seats
- The Club (previously the Rice Theatre) – a 155 seat cabaret-style theatre
- The Tucker Amphitheatre – an open-air multi-functional area which seats 150
- Zeidler Hall – a 220 seat theatre suitable for films and lectures
- The Lee Pavilion – a beautiful indoor garden with pools and a 30 foot waterfall
Function/Role:
The Technical Director works with the Director of Production and our technical team in ensuring high quality production values for all Citadel productions and rental events and making appropriate, effective and safe use of our facilities and human and financial resources. The TD will be joining a busy and successful Production Department and ideally brings their experience, sense of humour and an appreciation for the challenges each show brings.
Responsibilities (under the direction of/in collaboration with the Director of Production):
- coordinating activities related to Citadel Theatre productions
- participate in execution of design, construction and technical servicing of activities
- managing and supporting the theatre’s technical staff
- liaising and supporting production creative teams and producing personnel
- ensuring production deadlines are met
- facilitating inter-departmental communications between artistic, creative, administrative and production personnel
- researching, costing and purchasing of materials and equipment; researching theatrical techniques for our productions
- keeping track of ongoing costs and budget reconciliation
- offering technical support with our Rentals TD for rental events in the Citadel complex, ensuring the effective and efficient operation of facilities and equipment
- supervising the arrangements for effective and efficient operation of load-ins, fit-ups, sound checks, installations, tech weeks, runs and strikes for our productions
- collaborating on detailed production schedules and related paperwork
- participate in assigning staffing to ensure appropriate technical staff are present to meet the needs of our productions
- working with various departments for innovative solutions to challenges as they arise
- ensuring on-going maintenance of all our production equipment
- ensuring compliance with all relevant legislation, licensing and safety requirements
- participating in planning of long-term improvements and upgrades
Qualifications:
- more than five years of experience working as a TD with a broad working knowledge of a large-scale theatre
- a graduate of a post-secondary technical theatre training program or equivalent work experience
- strong knowledge of production techniques and theatre equipment
- strong computer skills including EXCEL and working knowledge of CAD (CT uses Vectorworks)
- strong team leadership and interpersonal skills
- highly organized, able to multi-task, prioritize work and meet hard deadlines
- availability to work evenings and weekends, when needed
- experience working with IATSE, ADC and CAEA
- a positive attitude
