Call for Submissions (Edmonton): New Musical Program – Alberta Opera

ALBERTA OPERA IS NOW ACCEPTING SUBMISSIONS FROM EMERGING COMPOSERS AND PLAYWRIGHTS FOR THE NEW MUSICAL PROGRAM

Alberta Opera is looking for fresh voices to collaborate on a new TYA musical adaptation based on a folk tale or piece of classic children’s literature. Under the guidance of Artistic Director Farren Timoteo, the chosen team will undergo a yearlong development process beginning in the summer of 2018. They will receive dramaturgical support, engage in a weeklong workshop culminating in a public showcase, build a cast of local emerging performers and have their new work produced as part of the 2019 Edmonton International Fringe Theatre Festival.

Each team* of applicants should submit the following:
– A CV
– An artist’s bio
– A portfolio of up to 3 samples of writing and/or compositions
– A letter of intent outlining the following:

• Why you want to take on this project?
• How do you hope to develop as an artist through the process?
• Your pitch for a new musical work based on a folk tale, fairy tale, or piece of classic children’s literature. The work should aim to be under 60 minutes, and appropriate for children aged 5 and up.

* Alberta Opera strongly encourages a two-person composer/playwright structure, but will consider individual applicants

We encourage applicants to pitch folk tales, fairy tales, and literature from diverse cultural backgrounds. The New Musical Program aims to introduce Edmonton audiences to stories from around the world, told in engaging and compelling ways, and to nurture the development of emerging artists with an interest in theatre for young people.

DEADLINE: June 18th, 2018 at 11:59 pm
Please send applications to Farren Timoteo at farren@albertaopera.com
