Job (Alberta): Technical Director for Presentation Events – Banff Centre for Arts and Creativity

Technical Director for Presentation Events (TD), May 7 through August 24, 2018.

Banff Centre is looking for a Technical Director for our summer season. The successful candidate will be responsible for coordinating summer presentation events.

This is a mentoring position and the TD will need to teach, demonstrate, and lead a practicum on handling technical tasks. The TD will also be required to assist in the preparation of production schedules and supervise the full and part-time crews for these productions. They will be in charge of scheduling the set-up, running, and eventual strike of the outdoor amphitheatre stage. The TD position also requires experience in creating stage plots in Vectorworks 17 or higher, and the ability to mentor a practicum through this process. They will be tasked with coordinating presentation events in any of the four indoor theatre spaces as well as the outdoor amphitheatre stage.

The TD will ensure work is conducted in compliance with the use of job-specific safety equipment and the handling of materials which may be classified as hazardous. Regular reviews of equipment set-up and monitoring of production technical staff is required to ensure that safe practices are followed at all times. The TD must be alert to multiple factors affecting the safety of all employees and on occasion the general public. The application of Banff Centre safety procedures including emergency procedures is a responsibility.

Applicants should have a degree or diploma in Technical Theatre from a certified educational institution and a minimum of 10 years experience working full time in the theatre industry, of which 5 is as a TD. They must have experience in coordinating set-ups and strikes involving lighting, staging, backline, and audio gear.

Previous experience working in a teaching environment with students, coordinating outdoor events, and working with truss roof systems is an asset.

This position will report to the Technical Director – Performing Arts, Banff Centre for Arts and Creativity.
Salary is commensurate with experience, a private room in shared accommodations with kitchen facilities is provided. A transportation allowance to/from Banff is also provided. The TD will be responsible for their own meal expenses. Staff discounts for meals and beverages and the use of Banff Centre recreation facilities are included.
